I would be surprised if Apple didn't allow a Sage app. They have already allowed several streaming video apps, like Netflix, which allows for streaming on the iPad and AirVideo which will stream media on your server to your iPhone/iPad. Additionally, Apple is getting eyed for antitrust issues now, so denying an app like Sage would be a bad move.

I wish I was more savvy with programming. I think the best way to address this issue is to create a web based plugin that streams video in HTML 5. That way, almost any phone or device could use it.

Would apple even allow a sage placeshifter app? After all, a lot of the functions of SageTV are frowned upon by the content industry overall (skipping commercials, watching content where we want to not where the content providers wants us to, etc.) and Apple would appear to have a track record of keeping the content providers (mostly) happy.

In addition, don’t they try and sell video similar to how they sell music on itunes? So something like a Sage Placeshifter app would seem to be counter to their own apps, wouldn’t it?

Would Apple allow a Placeshifter app on their phone, even if one was available?

Don’t know if I would pay $30 for a mobile Placeshifter for my phone (Palm Pre) but I would certainly be inclined to evaluate the prospect if one where made available for evaluation.

They have a slingbox player. That alone answers your question.

I tried setting up the air video server on a fast computer, but still had the same problem. I also tried having sage convert to any of the Apple format presets but the airvideo server seemed to have problems reading some of the files.
Sorry I missed this reply. I have a super beefy server (dual quad core xeon). Anyway I installed the app on the ipad and I installed the server on the server and added my videos directory and my recordings directory and away I went? The only disadvantage is that I name all my files .vob really I could change the mapping in the default applications but sometimes I want VLC to play them on my windows machine. So I change from .mpg when I finish my movies to .vob and currently airvideo doesn't play vob's. I could easily rename all my files to .mpg and solve the problem but for now they are talking about a new version to process vobs coming soon.

I don't know if that helped but it just worked. I have only tested on the local wifi and no any other way for your info.

For what it's worth Orb is working on having .ts / hd-pvr files work with their software. They have a couple of sample files from me so hopefully in one of the next few releases of the server, that functionality will be included.

(I haven't check with the AirVideo server lately but my quad-core 2.2 GHz was certainly not being fully utilized when trying to remotely stream my hd-pvr files via Orb so I'm hopeful that I have the horsepower once I have working software).

I think I figured out why airvideo wasn't working well for me. Apparently ffmeg seems to have problems converting h.264 in 1080i that the hdpvr produces. I believe both Sage and Airvideo use ffmpeg for their transcoding. This seems to cause the audio to do funny things like go out of sync or skip. Hopefully this gets fixed soon as it is effectively preventing me from watching video on my iPad.

Darcilicious, make sure you provide them with a 1080i hdpvr file for testing as those seem to be the most difficult to transcode.

Sounds like the VLC issue with streaming HD-PVR recordings to the Android...

Per my signature info, that's all I record. I know folks have problems transcoding these files and while I don't do it often, I haven't had any problems yet transcoding using the iPhone Widescreen format... yet.

Would be nice if this poll could/would influence SageTV team to develop an iphone/iPad app, but not really holding my breath. Orb and airvideo had their apps out for a while and now playon is getting ready to release their iPhone app, so I'm guessing getting SageTV app. approved shouldn't be difficult like it may have been before.

Personally, I would buy a SageTV iphone/ipad universal app, as long as it doesn't cost more than the cost of a placeshifter license and can install and use on multiple iphones/ipads. But in the meantime, I'm happy using Orb and Airvideo, combination of which just about does everything but schedule recordings. If I do need to record something while I'm out and about, I use ipad/iphone logmein app to log in to a home pc to access SageTV client.

Can you try transcoding with Sage to the Appletv widescreen format? That's what I have been having trouble with. The iPhone format usually works for me.

Hey, but that's what the mobile web plugin is for

Okay, what kind of problems should I be looking for? I transcoded 30 minutes of Penguins of Madagascar (NIKHD), 60 minutes of Through the Wormhole (SCIHD), and will be transcoding 60 minutes of Covert Affairs (USAHD) later tonight.

I watched most of Penguins and didn't notice any a/v sync issues but it was an animated show. It did play all the way through without issue though.

I'm watching Through the Wormhole currently and it looks fine. Used seek to get to the 53:30 mark and there weren't any a/v sync issues; and now I'm going to watch it uninterrupted from the start...

(One thing I like about this format is that AirVideo will play it over wifi without further transcoding so that's a plus )

Within the first minute or two you should see that the audio sync is about 5 seconds off or you will hear skipping of the audio every second. The funny thing is that it wouldn't do this every time I transcoded. Sometimes, it would work fine, but most of the time would not. Btw, I am using SPDIF from Directv receivers into my HDPVRs.

I wonder it could be something to do with the Directv audio. Or maybe because I don't have the output resolution fixed?

Nope, nothing like that on either of these two videos.

Well, thanks for trying. I have no clue why. I submitted this as a bug last week but Sage hasn't gotten back to me yet. I did find another thread from version 6 where people had my problem. http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=40281

I never tried transcoding to the appletv format with version 6.

You know, I forgot to mention one rather important detail... I've been using Quicktime (on Windows) for playback and it's been fine (great even) and streaming to my iPhone (also fine). I'm just now trying to play these same files in SageTV and the video is totally black! For both files!

Guess it's time to file a bug report...

I tried it on my Mac with QuickTime and vlc and had the same problems. I am trying handbrake on my server to see how that works.

Tried it before upgrading to SageTV 7 beta. Got the plugin to work within network, but unfortunately just couldn't get it to work over 3G.
