HD200 Component, HDMI, S-vid, Composit to VGA

Need help folks. I have a HD200 in a small office. The TV I had in there died a smokingly horrible death. I don't really want to buy a new tv If I don't need to.

I have like 5 Lcd flat panels floating around my house, All of them only have a VGA in. does anyone know of a cheap easy solution to get video from one of the many outputs of the HD200 to a vga in of my LCD. Don't care about the Audio, Just the video and the video doesn't have to even be that great quality.

They do make VGA to component cables. I've never hooked the HD200 up with something like it though. Somewhere like Monoprice or Bluejeanscable.com would be good to look at.

Not one of those TVs has a component input??

I'm guessing they're old monitors, not tv's. Pre-DVI apparently. As for a Component to VGA adapter, probably not much demand for those, so there probably aren't any. the VGA to component cables are only useful for outputing form a compatible video card (one that can be switched to YUV instead of RGB) to a oomponent television. I think I've seen some s-video to VGA back in the day, but I doubt there would be any on the market currently.

So none of those monitors have DVI?

I guess he could get some type of converter. My guess is they aren't cheap though. A new TV/monitor depending on the size may be the way to go even though you have multiple around the house.

You're looking at at least $100 (quite possibly closer to $200) to convert any of those to VGA. Component (YPbPr) and VGA (RGB) are not compatible, conversion requires a transcoder, not a cable. Similar situation with HDMI, you need some sort of DAC, the HDFury (2 or 3) would work, I'm sure there are others that would since AFAIK the HD200 doesn't do HDCP.

As Stanger stated, you need a converter box (and not just the VGA to component cables that are floating around the web as those are only for specific video cards). These will run you at least $80+ which starts getting into the realm of "is it even worth it"? Obvioulsy if any of them had DVI inputs, you could use an DVD to HDMI cable for connection, but unfortunately since you said "old", I am assuming they only have VGA.

The other option is to sell off those old VGA based LCD monitors and use the cash to buy something new (heck you can get DVI 22" LCD monitors for like $130 on sale).

I am sure this isn't what you wanted to hear, but its the best you are going to do.

I wanted to use my old sitting around media mvp and an old sitting around vga panel as a sage music hookup in the living room where the main stereo is (no TV there.)

So, I got something like this

and it worked great.

Should work with an hd200 except I can't remember if HD200 has an s-video or composite port on it (picture quality is certainly not awesome in this case, but does work.)

Thanks for the info on converters guys. I figured a converter would be pricey. Deacon's method looks like the easiest route for the OP.

But would lose HD capabilities. It would only be SD.

Not simple, that's HDMI to DVI-D, you can't convert DVI-D to VGA with just a cable. The DVI to VGA adapters are DVI-A to VGA.

Traker had mentioned the video quality didn't have to be great. That's really the only reason I would go that route if I was him. You're right though, I would definitely prefer it in HD myself.

I'm considering an HD200 to replace a current PC client.. the spouse would like something that doesn't crash to the Windows desktop on occasion.

That puts me in a similar boat, as my aged Runco projector only has a VGA input. (The included controller from a decade ago has component inputs that won't accept and scale HD signals... to be fair, that was a long time ago in the world of HD ).

Au contraire Fuzzy , I've found several component to VGA converter solutions, most upwards of $200, but two of the most intriguing are the HD Box Pro at $55 direct from Hong Kong and the DataPro CSV-955A at $70. The HD Box Pro is extremely popular in the console gaming world and constantly gets raves. Either should be acceptable, but I'm leaning towards the DataPro as it's more plug & play. The HD Box Pro has a remote and button on the front of the box for adjusting modes, where as the DataPro simply passes the original resolution.
