Hauppauge HD-PVR Fios Users

Hey everyone,

This seems to be the only forum I could find with up-to-date information with the HD PVR, a lot of other forums are just old post. I have a couple questions because I am still confused and hope you can help if it's not much of a problem.

I am getting Fios installed next week and from what I've read, unless you hack the box somehow you cannot get the saved videos on the DVR to your computer. So I didn't bother getting a DVR, wouldn't make much sense if I couldn't keep the footage I recorded. So I searched and found the Hauppauge HD PVR 1212.

What I want to know is for those who have Fios and the Hauppauge HD PVR 1212. Does it work fine with your computer or do you have errors with certain things? Is the 5.1 fixed now and will it work with component or do you need the blaster in? Would you recommend it to someone with Fios who wants to record games and shows?

I just really don't want to spend the money only to have numerous problems and such.

Thanks

I have FIOS and after RMA'ing one HDPVR it's been rock solid. I do use firewire to change channels, the FIOS boxes are one of the easier ones to use when it comes to firewire since they went with the stock commands for pretty much all their buttons(up,down, left, right, select, all the buttons you need to order VOD).

I also am very satisfied with FIOS and an HD PVR. However, if you do a search hear you'll see that some people do have problems with the HD PVR (unrelated to FIOS) so there is not way to be sure of success on your system other than trying it.

RMAing = obtaining authorization to return a defective unit to the manufacture for replacement. Hauppauge had a lot of trouble with the HD PVR initially and many of the initial units had to be replaced.

You can change channels with an IR Blaster but firewire is generally faster and more reliable.

Oh okay then, so basically it comes down to whether the unit itself is good or not, nothing with Fios.

I can pickup a firewire from anywhere right and all work? I don't use firewire so I'm not sure about them.

FireWire is a port (like USB) that you need to have on your computer. If you have a FireWire port on your computer, then you can connect the fios set top box to your computer with a FireWire cable. After you connect them, you will need to manually add the driver for the fios box to your computer and perform a few commands with the command line to enable channel changing over FireWire. The alternative is to use the ir blaster that comes with the hd-pvr to change the channel on the fios box. If you can get FireWire channel changing to work, it s better. But it definitely isn't plug-n-play.

You should probably read through a few of the threads on this forum regarding FireWire channel changing before attempting it to see if it is something that you are interested in trying.

You probably won't want to read through the whole thread. The first post has links to relevent instructions. You'll only need to do the channel changing part of the instructions, not the recording part.

There are no x64 drivers for firewire boxes so if you are running a 64 bit os you will have to use an IR blaster.
