HD-300 Wishlist
Well, the HD200 is out of stock, might as well start some HD300 speculation!
Here is what I would like to see in the HD300. 1) Ability to downmix DTS, TRUEHD and all other formats to 2 ch where needed. 2) Riddled with DRM support. Yeah DRM is evil, I know. But so is the rube goldberg machine-esq contraptions required to get current digital cable into Sage. People who have the HDPVR up and running and keep using that in all its DRM-free glory, those of us who crave cable card support can get it. Maybe, just maybe if the HD300 has the DRM to decode CC, they wouldn't have to modify the core of SageTV to support cable card. I know, I know.. but I can dream can't I? 3) While we are tossing the evil's of DRM in there. Lets add Microsoft play-ready for native Netflix support. It would be best if we could get that built into SageTV server itself, but not sure how that DRM shakes out. A nice compromise would be browsing netflix on SageTV and then passing off the video stream to the new HD300 to decode. What? Playready doesn't work on Linux which the HD200 is built on? Details, details... 4) Turn it up to 11. With the new Graphic engine in Sage 7 and with Ortus coming out, we are going to need extenders with some more horsepower. Lets make the extender as snappy as the client. While we are at, lets add some memory too -- need to have a nice buffer for all those textures. |

2) The problem isn't the hardware, it's getting DRM built into the whole SageTV system. AFAIK the HD200 (and even the HD100) have the processors necessary for DRM (pretty hard to buy SOCs without it these days).
3) I think the bigger problem is getting the license/agreement from Netflix. |

AFAIK, anything that talks to a CC tuner needs to handshake with it. I believe this is necessary, at least in part, because encrypted CC recordings are keyed to the PC they are recorded with, so some unique key needs to be given to the CC tuner (you know, like a PGP public key) for use in doing the encrypting.
