Unhappy issue with 2 part movie needs to be addressed

On Sunday night I marked "10.5" as a favorite so I would get both parts. However, I only got the Sunday night part 1. It appears that there is not enought information in the EPG guide to tell the difference between part 1 and part 2. Both have a Show ID of MV1475510000. Failure to correct this problem reduces the value of SageTV. I would be curious to know if TIVO users also have this problem.

BTW: I will have Part 2, I just have to watch it from my VCR backup. I am glad I still keep 3 of my VCR's up.

Ouch. Did you bring this to Frey's attention yet?

You would think that 2 parters would have 3 overall ShowIDs: part 1, part 2, and parts 1 & 2 together. However, I now see that other 2 part movies have the same ID for both parts! Thanks to your post, I now see that I have a lonely part 1 (Spartacus); but, luckily for me (if it is worth watching), both parts are to be aired again all in 1 show, so I can now delete part 1 & get the entire show later.

If all multiple part movies are listed like this, I wonder if SageTV could check the description to see if it includes some "Part X of N" text.

Anyone know of or checked other 2 part movies to see if they all seem to be listed with each part having identical ShowIDs?

I have not filed a bug report because I do not believe it is a sage bug. That is why I called it an issue. Also, I am using the released version of the software. If there there are enough comments and they also appear in the beta, I am hoping it will come to frey's attention from the news groups. I see narflex appears to be reading the groups again, but he may only be reading the beta group. I think the fix would be at the zap-it level of providing an improved Show ID scheme.

Oh yeah... I keep forgetting to check which forum a new message is in before responding. I'm using the latest v2 beta & plan to submit a link to this thread, since it is an "issue", as you say.

I'm sure it is a ShowID problem, but maybe Frey can do something about it, either in their software or by contacting Zap2it. Without some sort of fix, multi-part movies are a big problem, unless it just happens to be a problem only for the movies we looked at! Most people are _not_ going to want to remember to check for additional parts of movies & record them manually.

Can anyone think of other movies or miniseries to check??

Call for Help is another one. My wife is not happy with the Program ID's as Fridays show is the same ID as today's (Monday) show and since we actually watched live TV and noticed Sage was not recording and we then noticed it was the same program ID as Friday. The two shows are definately not the same episode.

So, who is at fault here? Sage? Zap2it or the Show producers?

Garbage in = Garbage out!

I am afraid until PVR's or the use of EPG's become more popular for automation, we are going to have to put up with the errors in the guides and basically babysit the automation. I am going to start checking it once a week and make sure everything I want for the following week is going to be recorded. That is if I can get scheduling_lookahead to actually show me 7 to 14 days in advance.

Automation is fantastic when it works but don't expect perfection.

Regards,

Mark

I have just submitted a problem report on this to insure the Frey is aware of this issue.

Yeah, I remember your posts on that one. That show is a series that has the same _episode_ ID (starts with EP) for each show, instead of assigning the same series ID (starts with SH). Shows with the same SH-style ID for each episode at least have every airing recorded. For now, you could at least set a 30 minutes padding at the end of the show.

Edit: I guess I'm surprised other episodes of this show record at all... when you set 1 as watched, they all get set as watched. Whose Line, almost all with the same SH style ID only set the watched flag for 1 episode at a time.

Maybe Frey needs to change their guide provider, is TOTALLY unacceptable to have this sort of problem, does Tivo and Replay have the same issues?
Mayb Hauppauge guide Titan TV could do better? I would not mind in the slightest a small ad logo on Sage from any guide provider if the shows were 100% correct, the sort of problems posted here make the favorites very hit and miss.

Yes, I know from experience that Tivo has this same problem. And this is the guide they charge $12.95 a month for.

The networks provide the data for the guides, so it doesn't really matter who the guide provider is. Do the networks care that Mr. ad skipping recorder didn't see all of a show? Probably not. What they care about is that Mr. TV guide/nielsen box user saw the show.

That doesn't mean there can't possibly be a software solution when it can check the description and see that it differs, especially when there is a section that states something like "Part 1 of 2".

This is a problem with the guide data that is provided to Tribune by the networks. If the data doesn't tell us a show is unique, SageTV has no basis for determining this. All I can say is that you should send me the examples and I will forward them on to Tribune so they can follow up. The best way to get this changed is for me to bombard Tribune with customer complaints. Here's what I need:

Your Service Provider (i.e. Comcast, DirecTV, etc)
Your Specific Lineup (Chicago-Digital, Chicago-Digital Rebuild, etc)
Your Zip Code
The specific show and channel the problem is regarding and please state what's being presented incorrectly (i.e. rerun instead of first-run, lack of unique show IDs for new episodes, etc)

Send this to info@freytechnologies.com and I'll follow up with Tribune.

I'm glad I put part 1 in the video library before part 2 came on! I was a little worried that it would not have done the right thing. I'm glad I was cautious and move the first part and set Sage to manually record 10.5. This way I was able to get both parts!

I guess that could be a work around for a mini-series...
