Question New installation: 1.4 or RC3, which way to go

Server and client hardware and OS all ready to go with exception of second HD for Client ghost backup and wireless kb/mouse.

Knowing what you know from your experience with both if you were a new SageTV user and were setting it up for the first time would you just go with current release 1.4 or install it and immediately install RC3? (will be SageTV on Server, SageTV Client and SageRecorder network mode on Client)

Config config:
Server: WinXP Pro sp2 all current, AMD XP2100+, 512M Kingston DDR 266, Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe mobo, ATI Rage Pro, 2xPVR 250s (2 more on the way), Promise FastTrak S150 SX4 w/256M Kingston ECC cache 4xWD SATA 250G Raid5 750G with 6G OS partition, rest 64k cluster NTSF for video storage, Gb NIC.

Client: WinXP Pro sp2 all currentAMD XP2400+, 512M Kingston DDR 266, Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe mobo, ATI Radeon 9600, output HDTV via ATI dongle, 1 PVR 250, DVD Player, 1 PVR 250, 20G 2.5" Laptop HD ATA100 5400 rpm, Gb NIC.

Input analog cable. Will use PVR 250 remote for now.

SageTV 2.0 in a second.

The only issue I can reproduce on any of my three HTPC's (don't use a 350 so I am not including those) is the network client issue. Frey has said they are waiting on a Java fix to finally kill that one but have a setting you can use in the meantime that works around it.

I would like to know how you do with having 4 PVR-250s in this motherboard. My previous server had a VIA chipset (KT600, I beleive) and I couldn't get more than two tuners to work. I had to revert to getting an Intel chipset so I could run three tuners and I would really like to go back to an AMD solution (price, power, etc.).

Excuse my ignorance but I did a bit of searching and don't know what/which network client issue you're specifically referring to. If I understood you correctly your opinion is RC3 is good enough to go for production (WAF factor) except for the nefarious ambiguous network client issue.

Well, I haven't "gotten them to work" yet! Don't have Sage installed yet... Server had no problem recognising 3 PVR 250s before I pulled one out and put it in the Client. Won't know if 4 will actually work in the Server until Sage installed AND my other two ordered PVR250s arrive this week.

There is an issue where clients will hang right now. If you go this route is a simple t/f value you can set in the properties file to get it to work. You can find the posts in the beta forums.

Some may have different experience, but for me, even with the 'Fix' the client performance is not as good as 1.4, Also there is the issue with the DVD in the client.

Sounds like the prudent approach I'll take will be install and get 1.4 working okie-dokie on both Server with SageTV and Client with SageTV Client and Sage Recorder network mode then ghost them. Then install R3 and find out for myself!

Gigabit Cat5e lines run today. Waiting for Gb switch to arrive from Newegg but that won't hold anything up. I'll just use my old 10/100 switch 'till it arrives with less bandwidth. This is going to be way Too Cool!

Just hope the 750Gb vid storage doesn't shrink too fast. Though I'm already thinking of getting a couple more SATA150 drives to run off the onboard two SATA150 channels Raid1 for OS and overflow storage if needed. But plan to wait for a couple more industry size increases first beyond the current 250Gb. Or do it sooner for a nice even Terrabyte. No rush on that though, now I need to get Sage installed! Had to take a break for some other commitments so won't be today. And I just got the 4 minute warning for dinner...

If this helps I would definitely install 1.4 first then whenever you are comfortable install 2.018 over the top no uninstall needed

for one there is a bug where if you are using serial connection, I had to install 1.4 first to get the serial connection to work

then install 2.018 over the top, if I installed RC 3 immediately then I would have to basically reinstall windows(I am sure I could have hunted down the problem but this was easier) and install 1.4 first anyways if I wanted it to work

basically just start with it
I will not hurt to install over the top
