Playback Exception - Fixed!
Hi All,
I've setup a new client for the basement theater, and I'm getting an error on DVD playback. I have all my videos on external USB drives, directly connected to the SageTV server. AVIs and MPEGs playback just fine, but DVDs fail. This is a new Win7 Pro install, with SageTV 7.0.23.246 Please see attached Log File - Kip

The error indicates that the client machine was not able to load the movie from the file location (H:\Movies\Alice in Wonderland (2010)\Alice in Wonderland (2010)\VIDEO_TS). Looks like the client is looking for the movie on the H: drive. I would guess that the H: drive is on the SageTV server machine. If that's the case, then the client PC will need network access to both the recording and import directories on your SageTV server in order to play back recordings and imported videos. To make a long story short, the client accesses the files directly, so you'll need to setup network shares. The best way to do it would be to have your recording and import directories setup as network shares on the SageTV server and use those network share UNC pathnames in the SageTV Detailed Setup instead of the local drive letter and directory pathnames. In addition to that, you'll need to ensure that the shares are setup with permissions that will allow the client to connect to it... this can be a bit tricky if the SageTV server machine is running Windows 7.
You can change the import directories from local drive letter pathnames to network UNC pathnames without issues, but you'll probably end up with duplicate listings of recordings if you convert any recording directories to UNC pathnames. To convert the recording directories, you'll have to do a little more work. If you need to convert recording directories from local drive letter pathnames to network UNC pathnames, post here and I'll try to get you step by step instructions on how to do that without messing up the recordings list. I'd go the UNC pathname route, but if you're not familiar with networking, an easier way to share without switching everything over to UNC pathnames would be to set up mapped network drives. Just share the recording and import drives from the server machine and then on the client machine you can map those shares to the same respective drive letters. So if H: is an import drive on the server, setup is up to be shared on the network. Then on the client machine, you can setup that share to be a mapped network drive. On the client, assign that mapped network drive to the same H: drive letter and then the client can access the files on H: just like the server can. Do the same with any other import or recording drives.

That did the trick, this seams to be only a problem with DVDs on the server, all the other formats play just fine without UNC paths. - Kip

Cool. I think you'll need UNC pathnames or mapped drives for recordings if you use comskip to skip commercials, otherwise it's not required.

no playback some dvds on HD300
I am having a similar issues but from playback on my HD300...just tried to watch some movies that I had ripped a few years back onto my Unraid server and was unable to view only certain movies...for example, when I select "chronicles of narnia on the folder section of HD300 and select the movie I get a black blank screen no video no audio.
When i then select Aliens, it plays fine, then I select "Signs" and it doesn't play at all..I then went to my server sagetv window and repeat viewing the same three movies...all without difficulty. I have included the sagetv.txt Log files which i created while performing the above maneuvers in the sequence mentioned...I'm totally confused...why should it play on the server/client but not on the "no codec hassle HD 300"???
