OK, just to clear some things up....

DTCP (the copy protection on Firewire, AKA "5C") is supposed to be based on the CCI information in the cable stream, exactly like CableCard DRM. Now there have been (many?) cases where it's broken, but that's how it's supposed to work.

And just like CableCard, if you use a DTCP approved/compatible recording device you can record off Firewire all day long. Unfortunately the only DTCP-compatible recording is DVHS.

Sorry not tryin to be a mean, but i haven't heard about my cable provider changing anything in the future.
You won't, that's the problem. It will just happen. Most cable companies don't even acknowledge one way or the other how they flag anything.

My understanding is that everything over FW should be 5C'd, even the copy freely stuff, with the end point required to enforce the restrictions based on the flags (just like a DCT). If there were DTCP compatible FW cards for the PC it would be able to record Copy-Freely content in much the same way that PC based DCTs work now.

While it is convenient to believe that Cable companies are malevolent, I think indifferent or incompetent are much more likely. As such, I doubt that it will change either way (if it works it will continue to, if it doesn't that will also not change) in the near future especially given recent Cable Labs clarifications explicitly enabling the use case. That's not to say there isn't some risk involved; just as there is in exploiting the analog hole (i.e. what the HD PVR/Colossus do) - which we actually know is in the cross hairs (compared to speculation re. DCT).

No I think it is rare like you said. Most cable operators won't change it as they don't know what it even is.

It's pretty much the same one that Slugger posted in the SJQv4 thread. I'll post when I get home and have some time.

I've been following the Colossus progress for a while now.

Should I assume this card is a failure to use with Sage ?
[No, I don't want to run restart scripts]

I'm looking for my first HD recording card/device and had hope
it would be the colossus.

Is there a worthy alternative, or should I wait a few months to see if
all the bugs are ironed out ?

There are peoply using the Colossus without any issues at all. Those of us with issues are posting more often in hopes of getting it fixed for us. Unfortunately, there are no alternatives. (well, there is the HD-PVR. a usb version but by the same company, also with similar problems and years old so less likely to get fixes)

The SiliconDust HDHomeRun is a better alternative than the Colossus, for those of us getting OTA broadcasts from an antenna. Best picture quality short of blu-ray.

The HDHR reduces the need for multiple HD-PVR and Colossus tuners but alone the HDHR does not solve your tuner needs.

My only issue is that there is slight time delay after commercials. This problems has been substantially reduced with the latest beta and sage update. I expect this will get fixed in the near future.

As to the daily restarts, its really not that big of an issue because you don't have to monitor it.

I vaguely remember a discussion about file sizes with the Colossus and the latest drivers, but I'm not finding it. My Colossus seems to only record at 8MB. I added the lines to get the highest rates to show up and then selected the highest quality but nothing changed. Is there a bug with setting this?
