Trying unsupported tuners
Is there any way to configure a tuner "by hand," as it were?
I'm running Sage v7 on a Gateway PC that has an AverMedia H751 installed. When I use the "Setup Video Sources" wizard, Sage detects an AverMedia device, but does not identify it correctly. I am wondering if there is some way to specify the characteristics of the device to SageTV without going through the wizard, just to see whether the device will work even though it is not officially supported. I am brand new to SageTV and know next to nothing about the underlying technology, but I am fairly savvy about computers in general (I'm a Windows device driver engineer by trade) and I am willing to get my hands dirty and take a few risks to learn something and try to get things working. There is nothing specifically in sage that lists 'supported' capture devices. It simply polls that information from BDA/DirectShow. If it isn't working 'out-of-the-box' in sage, then it likely won't (as it's probably not fully BDA/DirectShow compliant). There are some settings in the sage.properties file that get populated with this type of information, but I'm not sure they are really documented.

If Sage is just polling BDA/DirectShow, wouldn't it be using the same APIs that WMC uses for this purpose? But WMC recognizes this card just fine.

Sage is not WMC. There is a list of supported tuners on the SageTV site in Support and there is a thread in this forum of tuners that people got to work thru various methods or what worked and what didn't.
