I guess mine must only be "medium" and not really bad then, since the better tuners I've used fix the problem..

I was pondering about using my hdhr for ATSC - but I live in the middle of nowhere - has anyone tried these ?

the middle of nowhere is pretty relative. you ought to check tvfool.com to get an idea of what channels are available to you, and if they are all in the same general direction. This information is really required to determine if a given antenna is suited to your application or not.

That said, that antenna looks like a LOT more R&D went into aesthetics than function.

Ha! I defiantly agree with you on that.

I'd advise anybody looking for an antenna to look at http://www.hdtvprimer.com, especially

I used TVFOOL to get the distances for my home and they came back at 30 feet, also stating that an indoor antenna would probably be fine. I picked up a Terk indoor antenna and simply walking around the room caused the signal to go out.

I went with a Channelmaster 4242 mounted on the roof, with a CM7777 preamplifier, and every channel comes in crystal clear, even in the heaviest snowstorms.

But, what do antennas have to do with Sage at CES?

I wonder if the newer iterations of the hd-pvr have this improved chipset? After using an F1 for a month I sold my others on eBay and now have three F1s running with zero lockups.

I didn't change ANYTHING with my configuration that was having weekly lockups prior to the F1s. I simply unplugged the old hd-pvrs and plugged in the new ones.

Thx for the reply's - Fuzzy your correct the R & D on style was probably higher than that on substance.

I've used TVfool - Im within 40 - 60 miles of most transmitters - would definitely need a roof mount.

I'll do some more research and ponder for a bit. (I drive round my township and see some monstrosity's on peoples roofs - hence the appeal of a rather more stylish looking antenna ! )

Cheers

I thought that the older ChannelMaster antennas are consider better - the newer ones are a cheaper design that are made in China. I have an old 4221 and it certainly seems more solid than the new 4221HDs.

Maybe not. I'm 58 miles from my neighboring market, and I get 3 of their stations reliably using my unamplified (old school) CM4228 in the attic. It is split between an HDHR and my AirStar-HD5000-PCI (LGDT 3303 based). I pick up the neighboring market's ABC this way, since our local ABC has you-tube like quality, due to running 2 "HD" subchannels. That channel is around 65% in the HDHR's signal strength estimate (and 99% in the signal quality).

I can't prove it, but I bet that I could get all of that market's stations reliably if I added a preamp.

Yes, they have different characteristics. That's why I specified

According to TV Fool I am 80 miles from Buffalo and I receive all of the stations in that market with an older 4221 in my attic leaning on the roof trusses. I just have problems receiving the Toronto stations that are low powered and 10 miles away in a slightly different direction with a bit of an obstruction.

Thanks DrewG - I may splash for an antenna and try sticking it in the attic then - given the cost (not huge) at worst I can always bang it on Ebay if it doesn't work. (A quick check with on the WAF for a roof mounted antenna was not a +'ve).

Thanks for the input all.

Cheers

At the time, I was seeing good things about them. I also couldn't find anything else local to test out. I wanted something I could quickly and easily return if it didn't work.
