Primary/Secondary SageTV Servers ???

Is it possible to run a "secondary" instance of SageTV on a network, in order to keep the system working if the "primary" SageTV program goes down?

If not, this would be a nice feature to implement. Sort of like a secondary NIS server (in a UNIX environment) or a secondary DNS server.

I could see a primary SageTV server being used to obtain Sage Service schedule updates and providing the updated info to the secondary SageTV server. The two instances could communicate with one another over the network to verify availability and for configuration/schedule updates.

The secondary could either be configured to provide service only if the primary goes down, or I guess it could be available in parallel with the primary so clients could connect to the closest system.

It would be great to have both primary and seconday use the same location for file storage so that videos are always availble to clients when either system is acting as the server.

If this kind of feature could be implemented I could see the Sage applictations moving into use in a corporate environment. Not so much for TV watching (probably not at all withing most companies) but for serving video broadcasts, live training classes, meetings, speeches, etc. Cool thing is that a Sage Client could connect to the broadcast, pause it, go for lunch, resume where they left off, etc.

You can sort of do this currently with 1.3.3Beta, here's how:

PC1 - Runs SageTV without any capture cards, configured with dual network encoders, probably your file server also
PC2 - Runs SageRecorder as an encoding server to PC1
PC3 - Runs SageRecorder as an encoding server to PC1

If PC2 or PC3 goes down, then PC1 will automatically shift recordings to the machine that's up (new conflicts may arise since a tuner was lost). It will also be able to detect when that machine is back up and then start using it again. Pretty cool, eh?

That is a cool feature. It would be nice to have a backup capability for SageTV too.

If SageTV had a backup feature then Sage Clients could keep on working even if the primary SageTV went down.
