yes, found makemkv and have used it with good success. i was hoping to find software that might let me make more adjustments, such as reducing the bitrate for smaller file size

Handbrake is the only other one I can think of... I'm sure there are others.

I really like Handbrake except for one issue. When i rip a subtitled DVD and switch the subs on with my HD-200, the video freezes. I can tell handbrake to burn the subs and then everything is ok. anyone know a way to do subs where my player wont freeze?

DVDFab (paid version) can rip DVDs directly to MKV. The only problem is it outputs the subtitle to separate file. If you don't care for subtitles, then this is the easiest one step tool to use. I prefer the subtitles to be embedded in the MKV container, so for that I use DVDFab for ripping only, and then Handbrake to compress to MKV. DVDFab can rip most DVDs, but for the rare ones that it fails on, use AnyDVD to rip.

I haven't had any problem with switching subtitles on my HD-200 and HD-300. All my MKVs were created with Handbrake. Are you using extender mode or standalone? Maybe update your HD-200 firmware or enable the debug log and send it to SageTV support.
