As I had mentioned, it's not really that complicated, it can be done with a UI Mod that calles the:
Code:
public void TransmitCommandUsingInfraredTuningPlugin(java.lang.String TuningPlugin,
                                                     int TuningPluginPort,
                                                     java.lang.String RemoteName,
                                                     java.lang.String CommandName,
                                                     int RepeatFactor)
But it would require being on a certain sagetv UI widget, that is set up to capture the commands from the remote.

To add to Greg's excellent explanation, the "backend" doesn't interpret anything from your remote control, that's all handled by the frontend/UI code/logic.

You will notice that when you type numbers, nothing happens on the cable box until you hit enter. You can type numbers all day long on the liveTV menu and nothing will happen until you hit enter (or possibly until you hit the right number of digits).

When you hit enter, what happens is a recording of the current airing on the specified channel is scheduled on the backend, which resolves it in many possible ways, one of which might involve using an IR blaster.

Back up for a moment and consider the case where you're not running on the SageTV server, but on an extender. They have their own dedicated IR receiver and IR codeset, which doesn't match the server's or the STBs. But these work exactly the same way as on the server.

What you're looking for requires a plugin like I linked above.

No, I don't think it's actually new. This is what the configuration screen uses for testing IR commands. It should work for transmitting any command that uses a TuningPlugin. I'm not sure if it works from a client or not, I've never tried setting up a tuningplugin from a client.
