Moving from UNC path to Mapped drive

Can anyone direct me to the correct place or let me know. I currently have my recordings (Tv shows) in sage tv using a UNC link via a USB drive. I just purchased a Synology NAS (DS410) but can only map it as a letter to a folder, map a drive in windows etc.

How do I move my recordings to the new folder on my nas and 'tell' sage where it is now, is there something I can change so it can pick it up from the NAS folder?

I'm not familiar with that particular device, but if it appears as a drive letter on your server, you should be able to share it out on the same UNC path you used for your USB drive.

That said, personally I would tend to stay away from any NAS device that doesn't support SMB natively but requires you to install special drivers on your PC to access it.

I would totally stay away from mapped drive letters if you can help it, especially if you are using other apps like Comskip, SJQ, etc.

I don't understand this comment, if it uses CIFS, you can point to it as an UNC path. A mapped drive is just a "shortcut" to a UNC path. Unless you're planning to use iSCSI or something, in which case it's not a Mapped drive, it's a real drive letter (the fact that it's a IP connection is inconsequential). And even if that's the case you can still use UNC paths, just use the path to the SageTV machine.

But wayner has it right, Mapped Drives are just asking for trouble.

UNC path

OK let me illustrate what i am doing: Currently the UNC is \\sage-tv\tv recordings

With My nas (there are no special drivers anything like that it is)

\\192.168.10.147\media\tv recordings

What do I need to do on my server, e.g. change what? so sage will find my existing recordings once they are moved.

I guess what I meant to say from old to new I am still using UNC but the name is changing.

Thanks

Reading the FAQ would be a good place to start.

I would also highly recommend that you give the device a name and use that instead of the IP address in your UNC path. If the device itself doesn't support this (mind-boggling but possible, I guess), you can do it via the HOSTS file on your server.

UNC Path

Thanks for the FAQ I guess base don Ill be changing one unc to a new one. I will bring down sage and the service. Then copy from the old UNC to the new one, prior to coming down I was going to change Video directory to the new unc

Do the copy then bring it back up. All recordings should then be recognized? No interm steps, i hope.

UNC change worked

Thanks for all that replied. This worked like a charm I am using sage 7. I also find where in the DS410 I could change the name so I am not using the IP address but rather the name for the DS workstation.

I do notice a pause the first time I go out to access recordings but then works fine. I made the sure the drives don't power down in the NAS box but otherwise im willing to put up with it for the Raid protection.

Thanks for your help.
