Bandwidth for Placeshifting

I would like to run Media Server at home where I have approximately 3-4 mbps U/L speed, and Placeshifter or an HD300 extender at my vacation home, where I'm limited to about 1.7 - 2.0 mbps D/L. Can anyone share their experiences with placeshifting with 2 mbps (or less) bandwidth?

And would performance be about the same under these conditions for both the Placeshifter client and the HD300?

Thanks.

Duane

My situation is very similar to yours except my upload is about 2 mbps. Real world upload is hovering around 1.2 mbps and it is very watchable. I get some pixelation from time to time and it is not HD quality, of course. I would put it slightly better than SD quality.

Some of those online bandwidth speed tests allow you to set the location you want to test your bandwidth speed to. It can show a real world expected speed since you are bouncing around the net.

I assume you meant real world download is 1.2 mbps? If so, that's very encouraging. I think I'll give it a try. I wish there were some way of throttling my download speed at home so that I could test this here. Our vacation home is in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and when I go back there in October it will be for 6 months. I'd like to have things pretty well ironed out before we go. Maybe my router has a provision for that....

Thanks.

Duane

You can select the closest location on the map to where your vacation home is and run the test. So your upload speed would be checked against a server close to your vacation home instead of your area.

It isn't perfect, but you an get an idea of what loss to expect at the very least. I found it spot on with my situation.
