HD-PVR on Ubuntu 10.10

Forum post
http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/show...ighlight=hdDVR

Discusses the HD-PVR but the last post is over two years old.

I am sure things have changed a bit... or did it?

Any tips on installing the Hauppauge HD-PVR under Ubuntu 10.10 from the Sage community?

Thanks for you help

I have 2 running under ubuntu 10.10. The older unit was plug and play... just plugged it in, and it worked, no issues. The second one (a newer one) had a slightly different usb id, and as such, I had to to do a slight tweak in the kernel module for it to be recognized.

I'd recommend just plugging it in, and them running dmesg and see if shows that the new device was attached. If so, then you are done.

SageTV works with nicely with the hdpvr under linux, no issues there, but if you are going to use ir blasting then I recommend using the CommandIR device (unless you are happy using lirc), and they have a native, non-lirc, blaster that works very well.

I haven't restarted my HDPVRs (or sagetv) in a couple months now. But, right now I'm not recording very much either. During the prime season, I see HDPVR issues about once every couple of weeks.

I have two hd-pvrs on my ubuntu 10.10 system. I haven't restarted in 41 days and, if memory serves, that was a power outage.

The only issue my HD-PVRs have is when switching to / from HD. When they go from an HD signal (channel) to a non-HD, or vice versa, they take enough time to sync that sage interprets it as failure, then comes back and re-tries a minute or two later. The result is that I am sometimes missing the first minute or two of a recorded show. When watching live tv, it can be quickly fixed by switching up or down a channel, then back and it will sync immediately.

Since I now rarely record non-HD shows, it's not much of a problem. Also, my units are a couple of years old. Maybe newer ones don't have this problem.

But system stability is a non-issue. It's rock solid.

When I had DirecTV I used a channel lineup dedicated to the HD channels. I NEVER had an issue with my HDPVRs. I have recently switched to cable TV and am now seeing some of the challenges with the resolution switching. Maybe I should run my cable output through a scaler...

One other question can the Linux server be used as a network encoder for Windows SageTV server. That way I can keep my setup on WHS but get the stability of linux for the HD PVR.

When I first switched, I had to run the server as Linux and the encoder as Windows if memory serves.
