What happens after no more EPG?
Please forgive my ignorance on this.
As per http://www.geektonic.com/2011/06/wha...mers-post.html It seems the EPG will only be available for one more year. What happens afterward? Is there no other way to get channel programming for SageTV? The only thing I use SageTV for is as a super DVR. Naturally, this is a big concern for me. |

This has had much discussion since the google announcement. Xmltv is your alternative. Everyone outside of USA. Have been using it for years and from what I hear it's pretty fantastic.

By the time the EPG updates will be gone it will be December 21, 2012 the day, according to the Mayans, the world as we know it will end.

Besides, there is XMLTV and also some of the Devs are looking into creating plugins.
Just have to learn from the non-US folks regarding EPG updates |

Thanks guys.
At least I know I can continue to use STV for as long as it works. |

Sage-supplied EPG may very well go away at some point, but that article doesn't say when that will happen. What it says is that it won't happen within the next year. Don't read more into it than is there.

And besides, the sage-supplied guide data is really not THAT important. MC2XML grabs the exact same zap2it info, the only thing the sage guide data did is provide a little quicker, and in-UI setup. I'm thinking it wouldn't be THAT difficult to make an in-sage configuration plugin for the MC2XML program.

Well, that means at least those of us who have come to know and love Sage (something I could not say about my earlier DVR solutions) we can "freeze" at the versions/licenses we have now and keep it going. But I really hope we're all worrying for nothing. Today's Q&A did not, however, do much for the butterflies in my stomach.

I took the EPG announcement as a message that we are not about to cut everyone off. They may indeed keep it up longer but that decision has probably not been made. I think at a point long before the end of EPG we will have more information about the future of the product.
If they are going to deliver a GoogleTV with DVR functionality I think you would have to assume they will cut if off at some point to encourage a transition.

No worries about the EPG, I have been using XMLTV for 3 years without any issues.

I create XML files with 14 days worth of guide data for all my channels daily using three different sources :
- mc2xml.exe - XmltvConsole.exe - EPGcollector You do not have to use several XMLTV sources, but as I have channels from several countries, I need these three XMLTV grabbers. Daily, these 3 XML files are refreshed and imported into SageTV EPG guide using a $18 software called stephanem XMLTV Importer

Thanks for the comprehensive reply. I've downloaded everything and noted the URLs & instructions on the various sites, so that I can deploy these as needed.

I was wondering much the same thing. Hopefully this will get more automated, but it seems like a fun project to try it now.
