Could Diamond become an application rather than a plugin

This would likely be a ton of work but could Diamond become an entire client front-end for Sage rather than "just" a UI mod? In other words you could install Diamond on a PC and it could connect to a backend Sage server and give you the same functionality that you have today but without the requirement for a (no longer available) Sage client license?

No there is no way to use anything created in studio in anything outside of sagetv.

Why not create everything outside of studio? The mobile web browser gives pretty much full capabilities, including video streaming as does TiSageTV. But these aren't the UIs that you would want for a PC setup.

Assuming that the full (rather than the mobile) Sage Web Server had streaming capabilities then this would be somewhat analagous to Netflix which you access on your PC via a web browser (until it starts the playback and brings up Silverlight.)

That's kinda like asking the neighbor that gave you some nice drapes if she'd mind building a whole house to match them...

A house which you have already built for Android and iOS devices - at least partially.

Or how about this - Diamond becomes an XBMC plugin that gives you the capability to do the following from a Sage server:

Browse the guide
Schedule shows
Browse upcoming recordings
Watch LiveTV
Watch currently recording shows.

Grafting these capabilities on top of the media file playback in XBMC should provide an almost complete client solution for those of us that want to keep using Sage as our backend server.

That's pretty trivial. I think they can do it

In all seriousness, though, the first 3 things is trvial, but anything to do with streaming video is a lot more complex (and I'm bet that this is one reason why Google bought SageTV).
