Ceton and Sage Alternatives

Is anyone aware of anything (other then MCE) that works with Ceton? Anything in the works even?

NextPVR says someone is working on it but there has been no response to that topic as to a timeframe.

MCE is just not an option for me because - As I understand it, you can't have a server in the basement (and a virtual one at that) - and have a full blown sage extender-esque thingy hooked to your TVs. Even the XBOX is limited... or am I wrong?

I may just end up getting a tivo the way things are going

(and I still plan on holding out as long as i can with SageTV)

You can have a server in your basement, but it won't work the same way the sage server does. You'd have to have the tuners in you media center pc hooked up to your tv and record to the server. That would work just fine.

Due to the DRM requirements, nothing else support CableCard fully/officially and I doubt anything will, at least not in the forseable future.

Don't know about anything else (other than SageDCT) that works with it. The upcoming HDHR Prime works with MythTV (confirmed by SD) for CopyFreely channels.

But for CopyOnce channels, MCE is the only option since no one else got on the DRM wagon (other than TiVo)

I am not sure why MCE+XBox won't work for you? You can have the MCE server in the basement with the Ceton. Xbox will give you almost full functionality (including the DRMed recordings). From my research, short comings of Xbox (for me) are inability to play ripped DVD folders (it does play ISOs) and inability to play ripped BluRay unless transcoded.

I am in the same boat as you. My current setup is a headless SageTV server in the basement closet and extenders. Comcast encrypted everything here so I started looking at MCE. But since it appears that Comcast only marks HBO etc as CopyOnce, I've decided to stick with Sage for now and get either HDHR Prime or Ceton working. I prefer HDHRP since it is networked, but it is yet to arrive and still need to work with SageDCT.

There is mythtv support in the works for Ceton, but just for copy freely, since MythTV does not support DRM. There is a guy who wrote code (similar in concept to SageDCT) and has packaged it for mythbuntu users.

See http://mythtvblog.blogspot.com/2011/...24-part-1.html

(continued in parts 2-4)

Or, you can use DVBLink Server Network Pack and have a much line SageTV srever\client experience with Windows 7 MCE! I just found out! If I can re-use my hardware (which I think I can), I might be able to upgrade my MC environment (extenders) under MCE.
