Question Airplay hack possible?

I just started looking at an interesting bit of code called Shairplay that emulates an Apple Airport Express to receive audio via Airplay. In essence, it allows you to create a software-based Airplay receiver.

Here's my thought - Since Airplay allows multi zone synced audio, what if it could be run on an HD200 or HD300? In theory this would let you have synchronized streaming audio to multiple extenders from iTunes or an Airplay compatible program (possibly a SageTV plugin).

https://github.com/johnboiles/shairplay

Anyone have any thoughts on this? Or am I crazy...

I was going to add that functionality when I made a new music ui, but with the current state of sage it won't happen. The project was in too early a stage when the announcement came for me to continue.

On a related note, I have been looking at multi room audio options:

1) Sonos - seems "best" but expensive-ish.
2) Squeezebox - more "hacky" and concerns about Logitech's intentions for this
3) Apple Airplay - easy, I'm on iOS devices, and I already have an airport express

I read a post somewhere from someone how setup AirplayServer on his computer, to allow incoming airplay. He also setup Airfoil to target multiple airplay targets for output.

So there is a man in the middle doign this, but then again my SageTV server is always on.

I may look at this as a potential alternative to Sonos - which I was settling into.

My main thing is that I'd love to be able to use my extenders to drive audio zones. This way I could have my 3 TVs playing synced audio, and I could also use my two unused HD100 extenders as audio only devices for my family room and patio.

I'm open to other suggestions though. I've looked at Sonos and others and they're just too expensive for my taste.

Anything that does what you are asking wirelessly is going to be expensive. The only other way is to run speaker wire everywhere and have a switch.

i got 3 older generation Apple Airport Express' off flEaBay for under $20 each, and it gave me exactly what he was asking (well, apart from using the HDx00's) Multi room audio that can be synced.
