Any plugin developers interested in porting Google Weather to STV3?

Some have suggested upgrading to V7 so that Weather functionality works again. Even if you update to V7, if you want to use the old interface (STV3) with V7, weather doesn't work.

I have had a few programmers at work take a look at the STV3 and STV7 XML files and they all say that it's way over their heads to figure out how to integrate it from STV7 to STV3.

Is there anyone here on the forums that is capable of (or interested in) mapping the Google Weather portions of the STV7.XMLl into the STV3.XML?

It doesn't have to have all the bells and whistles, like offering to install the jar file for you, it just needs to work

Manually installing the jar file or property file (and even hard coding my own zip code into it) are no problem at all.

It would be nice to have weather working again in the STV3 plugin if anyone is interested.

I think I can whip something up in a few days. It won't be fancy, and it won't have much error checking.

Well, that was a lot easier then I thought. The install isn't pretty but I think it will work. Try this:
  1. Download the attached ZIP file and unzip to the SageTV3 directory (..\SageTV\SageTV\STVs\SageTV3)
  2. If you are currently using SageTV3 load SageTV7, go to the plugin manager, and install the "Google Weather" plugin.
  3. Configure Google Weather using SageTV7 and make sure the correct weather information appears (while still in SageTV7).
  4. Switch back to SageTV3 and load the .stvi you unzipped in step 1 (GoogleWeatherForSTV3.stvi).

Hopefully you will now see the new Google Weather menus. They are not near as pretty as the old menus but it's what we have to work with. And before somebody asks, I probably won't make it use the old weather icons, sorry.

Post here if it doesn't work or you have questions.

Tom

I'm using 6.6. I attempted to upgrade to V7 but it was an Epic Fail. I did save the V7 install folder though and I did set up weather in it. I should be able to get the jar and properties file and copy them over to the similar directories found in V6.6.

This STV V3 should work in V6.6 right?

Now I see. If you get the correct weather jar it should work, but I can't be 100% certain since I created it in v7. (There may be an incompatibility when you try to import a STVi created with v7 into v6.) It's somewhat uncharted waters so let me know how you make out.

That's kinda like asking "how do I fix my car?", without more details...

What I meant was (and my question was directed at tmiranda), can the STVi be uninstalled if for some reason it would fail (uncharted waters) or what specific files would need to be restored in the event that it fails.

I'm not sure what files get touched when you apply the STVi but I'm sure that tmiranda knows exactly which files get modified.

Oh I see, then you probably want to keep a back up of the STV3 file.

I didn't know that was the only file that gets touched by the STVi install. Thanks!

I'm fairly sure the STVi will NOT work. I created it using V7 and I've been told by reliable sources that V7 will not create V6 compatible STVi's without doing some special things, which I did not do.

Having said that, there's not much you can break. Uninstalling the STVi should be fine but as Fonceur said keep a copy of SageTV3.xml.

So do you still think I should give it a shot (if you're almost positive that it won't work)?

I'm not sure how special the special things are

It can't hurt to try it.

Tried it tonight. I was able to select the file to add as a new STVI. It adds it and then it's listed in the plugin section.

However, when you click "Force Rebuild and Reload STV File with plugins" it fails with some message that pops of too fast for me to even read...

If it would be helpful for me to post what the error message is, I can try recording it with a camcorder or something like that and doing a frame-by-frame to post what the error message is...

Let me know.

Well, if you plan on fixing it someday, I greatly appreciate it

It would be a nice after-the-holidays present if you ever have the time!

One of my (filled) 2TB Sage drives is dying right now anyway so I'm mostly working on trying to recover the data anyway LoL.
