Migrate server to Linux from Windows, licence question.
Hi Guys,
Over the past year i've gotten to know SageTV and Linux quite well, so now I'd like to be able to progress with my plan. That plan is to migrate my home server to Ubuntu from Windows 7. That means migrating Sage from Windows to Ubuntu also. I've just realised that i'm probably snookered as I won't be able to use the windows server key in my linux install, yes? Is this my own tough luck or would SageTV support allow me to transfer the licence? I haven't tried my hand at running in Wine but I wouldn't be too optimistic. Any thoughts? Cheers. |

Depending on how beefy your server is, you might be able to run SageTV in a Windows VM. I'm playing with Win7MC running in a VM on Ubuntu 11.10, and it works fine. Sage would be easier, since you won't have to resort to registry hacks to make it record to a network share, etc.

I've got an i5 dual core @ 3.33Ghz and 4GB RAM. That'd be enough, right? I could add more ram if needed. Thanks. |

One thing RHEL seems to do better is the unbinding part of passthrough. On the Ubuntu's I've tried (older, 10.x), I need to manually do the steps at http://www.linux-kvm.org/page/How_to...th_VT-d_in_KVM regarding "unbind device from host kernel driver". All the RHEL's I've used just do this automatically. I think Virtual Box might be able to do passthrough also. The Vbox management gui is far, far better then KVM's, so it might be easier to do. You can only use either KVM or VirtualBox, and I need KVM for work stuff. Drew
