Licsense Question

I have sagetv server 7.1.9, 3 client liscenses, and 2 HD200's.

I'm about to start a new job that requires alot of travel and I want to be able to use sagetv from a hotel. I picked up the trial version of placeshifter to see how it works, and of course it has the "15 day trial" message all over it. Obviously I can't get a key for it anymore, but is there anyway to enter the key from one of my extenders so that I can get rid of the message? I understand that I will only be able to use either the extender or the placeshifter if sharing the liscense, but I think I can live with that.

also: I'm not currenly using (1) of my (3) client liscenses, any chance of using that as a placeshifter liscense?

The only extender that came or needed a license was the HD100. Both the HD200 and HD300 can be considered a hardware license. The actual hardware itself is recognized as a legal SageTV client.

I though I read somewhere that the hd200/hd300 and placeshifter liscenses were the same, and could be used as a "pool"......so long as you don't use more concurrent connections then you own liscenses for.

That's probably old posts talking about the HD100, the MVP, HD100, and Placeshifter use the same "pool" of licenses, but as Gerry noted, the HD200/300 are licensed by their existence.

HD100 licenses and Placeshifter licenses are interchangable. AS previously posted, the HD200 and HD300 have no license requirements.

hmmmmmm

I suppose the only option then is to get into a bidding war on ebay for a hd200 or hd300 which I can take with me and use as a placeshifter.

From what I gather, purchasing a hd100 used, with its liscense and then using that liscense to activate/use placeshifter on a laptop would be a no-no? As would me trying to trade my extra client liscense to someone for an hd200 or similar? I have no intention of abandoning the Costa-Sagecordia until there is just no way to continue on; or something of equal capability comes along. I just need to figure out a way to make the system available to me on the road without reducing functionality at the house.

I used placeshifter while on the road, with my 512 k up, which was usually only 386 k; picture quality really sucked. Just my opinion. Really need good upload bandwidth, hotel download usually sucks, 3g or 4g cell service works better.

You could use something like playon to stream the shows to android or IOS devices by passing the need for a placeshifter licenses.

Another option would be to move your server to WHS. The WHS version of SageTV includes a single Placeshifter license built-in (to make up for the lack of a UI on WHS).

Thats a good point fuzzy. Wouldn't I need a liscense for the WHS version though? I could probably run it in a virtual enviroment on the same server but only use it for placeshifting over the internet. It could access the same resources as the sageserver for windows that way.

the WHS version still uses the same windows license, it's just a different install file. You would need a copy of WHS, of course.

Is there anyway to install/force the WHS version of sagetv onto a Vista x86 system? I know there are alot of advantages to using WHS, but I have a very stable vista server and I'd rather not dive into something completly new at this point. My server setup is headless, so i'm not worried about that aspect of the WHS version of sage server.

no, the WHS version installs through the WHS console.

I don't know what would happen with Vista but sometimes I would install the WHS version by just clicking the .msi file in WHS. Might install that way in Vista, might not....

Tried that myself but SageTV recognizes the OS and just does a normal install no free client when installed on anything but WHS.
