Oh My Lord!
Being an old TiVo owner, I decided to head over to the TiVo web site tonight. They had an interesting link to the Pioneer web site for the Pioneer TiVo/DVD Burner combos. The top of the line system has one tuner, a 120 GB HDD and a DVD burner. Total price is... US$1800. The other unit has 80GB HDD and is only US$1200. Gasp!
I'm going to sit down for a bit and be very happy that I have a sage system. |

No I was referring to a Pioneer DVD burner with TiVo built in
They have been around since Christmas I think anyother company is making them now as well nut just think a stand alone DVD burner 250 and up TiVo 80 GB like 300 so Pioneer which makes good products cost more for their DVD burner stand alone so 900 is probably not that off also you can a computer DVD burner for under 100 nowadays but people do like standalone no messing with it touch one button to do things all remote driven from plugging it in no programming via girder or anything else Last edited by kny3twalker; 06-10-2004 at 02:55 AM. |

One of my biggest complaints with stand alone PVR pricing is that they gouge consumers to get a decent amount of recording space. They act like the whole unit figures into the recording space and not just a small part. As illustrated by this example, it can record 50% more so it should cost 50% more.

The price is step but they are going after the larger market segment that doesn't know about computers, video capture cards, and the cost of making HTPC. Also, most homes don't have TV that have RGB or DVI inputs. They may have S-video input, but I heard it is not that great for displaying on a TV. If my TV didn't have those inputs(RGB/DVI) I would be hard press in convincing my wife to watching TV shows on a small flat panel screen. Also when you look at components that some people buy, like my friends, for thier entertainment system (Receiver, Speakers, DVD players, monster cables galore, widescreen TV) it is not that more expensive. It is just another high price gizmo that they can show off during gatherings.
I am glad that I am somewhat computer literate to make my own PVR. Paying $1200 just for a PVR. For that amount I also have a pretty decent SFF computer.
