Google Buys Sparrow

see http://tinyurl.com/7kbe2et

"we’ll be busy with new projects at Google...we do not plan to release new features for Sparrow apps...Full speed ahead!"

Why does that sound familiar

Well at least the CEO said...

We’d like to extend a special thanks to all of our users who have supported us, advised us, given us priceless feedback and allowed us to build a better mail application. While we’ll be working on new things at Google, we will continue to make Sparrow available and provide support for our users.

Does it sound the same to you?

But at least Sparrow has a definite and public purpose for the acquisition - they will be contributing to Google's GMail app.

I'm not sure they will be working on Gmail for iPhone (or any other client). If you read their announcement:
Quote:
We care a lot about how people communicate, and we did our best to provide you with the most intuitive and pleasurable mailing experience.

Now we're joining the Gmail team to accomplish a bigger vision — one that we think we can better achieve with Google.
(My emphasis)

Note that that the did their best and are going to accomplish a bigger vision. While they are joining the Gmail team, it doesn't indicate they are are working on anything other then Gmail. My guess is that Google wanted a talented team and got that. The Sparrow client was incidental, much like the SageTV software was incidental to acquiring the SageTV team.

Here's an interesting article on the acquisition.
