Horizontal Ghosting...

I'm currently using Frey's Blackbird card, but I've also used other Hauppauge cards (WinTV 250 PCI, WinYV USB2), and I have a question:

Is there any way to minimize the vertical ghosting (using the PC monitor) I'm seeing with all these cards on SageTV? BTW, it happens in BTV as well. The video image is generally very good, except for the pronounced ghosting.

Thanks in advance!

Specs:

Asus P4P800 Deluxe
P4 2.8 HT cpu
Antec 550W TrueControl PSU
ATI 9800XT video card
Frey Blackbird capture card
600G HD space
NEC 2510 DL DVD burner

it is a deinterlacing issue
try using a good decoder like sonic cineplayer, NVDVD rather than intervideo or something

also rendering with VMR9 should help(remember to enable 3d acceleration when using VMR9 rendering)

furthermore you have a powerful system look at using ffdshow

try changing around the DXVA mode

here's some info on it
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/de...guide_9inb.asp

it is all about the rendering

oh one other thing try using different bit rates(recording qualities)

look in the FAQs for info on making custom recording qualities

Thanks for the advice, but I think I used the wrong term. I think I meant horizontal ghosting (vertical lines being ghosted to the right).

are you saying that the image looks as if it has its own double but moved to right
it is not a full image but more like an out line
almost looks like a ghost of the images on TV where they are just moved to the right slightly

if I have described this correctly
it is most of the time either a driver issue with the card
which I am doubting cause no one else has this problem
or it is an issue with your cable

do you use analog or digital cable
or over the air broadcast

with digital cable or satellite this should not be there at all
with over the air it is quite common
with analog cable it it is common as well
you can try using better cable wire
or adding an amplifier (not sure if this would help though)
or call your cable company

does this issue happen if you plug the cable from your computer and plug it into the TV itself?

there is one tool you can look at that I know of
http://www.shspvr.com/download/hcwpp2ut.zip

it adjust the temporal filter
you can adjust in the registry as well but this does it in realtime

not sure still what you mean by vertical lines though

can you post a screen shot
you will probably need to do it with VMR9 video rendering (make sure to enable 3d acceleration or it will not do VMR9) or have a special program to take overlay screen shots

or use WinTV 2000 to take the screen shot

Thanks for the extensive reply and advice!

Unfortunately, neither hcwpp2ut.zip nor pvr250prefiltertweak seem to work with the Blackbird...

Here's a screenshot (the ghosting is most noticeable to the right of the text):

I'd call that Horizontal but that's beside the point.

That's definitely in the signal, and I'm not sure there's much you can do about it on your end. Unless someone else has an idea you may want to complain to your cable co.

OK, so I don't have anything useful to say... but I just liked the Zathras character. I even debated naming a cat Zathras, but I'm not sure I want to have to say that name all the time... migth get some interesting looks from people, though!

I used to have that type of problem until I read an article about the cause. The cause is in the antenna cable which is picking up a reflected copy of the image. I don't recall exactly where my problem was, but I was able to get rid of it. I think it may have been in a bad right angle connecter I was using.

ive not had this problem on my pvr250, however i had this problem on my wintv cards..

what i ended up doing was carefully taking a pair of pliers, and tightening the cable coax to the card. making a tighter connection, seemed to help the picture quality a lot.

there were still a few channels that had ghosting, but that as far as i could tell was the broadcast not necessarly my setup. the ghosting on certian channels would appear on all the tvs also.

this is probably the result of a weak signal somehow.

I was able to reduce the effects of the ghosting to a great degree by adjusting the brightness, contrast, and saturation levels for live TV. That really helped a lot, and now I'm reasonably happy...

You should see my cap that says:

"Kosh Who? Gesundheit!"

Talk about stares and questions...

Sorry... more off-topic stuff... maybe a whole thread should be started for such things in shows.

There was an Andromeda episode with the following exchange (slightly paraphrased, since I don't have the show on my drive any more):

Dylan: "... that's the way..."
Rev: "Uh-huh, uh-huh"
Dylan: "You like it?"
Rev: "Uh-huh, uh-huh"

I always wonder how many such things I've missed.

Frunobulax, the first thing I would check are the cable you are using, try attaching your TV to the same cables to see if the problem persists. If so, Is the TV cable you are using on its own line? or, are you using any spliters? Check cable connectors and or replace the cable. If all possible have a dedicated line (without spliters) run from the cable box outside of your home to your computer.

I am assuming that you are having this problem with all of the cards that you used. If so, It is a cable issue. Also try the advice above they are fee except for your time.

Thanks, DoughBoy. I tried the cable that comes directly from outside to my cable modem, and I got the same results.

I'm going to chime in on 2 levels. #1, Zathrus rocks.

Now on to the important part.

I can tell you that it is almost certainly a problem of signal strength. Amplifying may or may not help, it depends where the problem starts really. I would definitely call the cable company and complain. It may be the wire inside the house (unlikely) or the actual plant (cable) that is feeding you from outside (likely.) Either way, call and complain.

I tried a signal amplifier with no change.

I thought Zathras WAS the important part!

Maybe I'm being too anal about this ghosting issue (don't everybody nod vigorously at once!)

Attached is a screen capture that should demonstrate what I'm seeing. Keep in mind that I'm viewing on a 19" PC monitor which shows no ghosting artifacts otherwise.
