Yeah, $250 for lifetime, not too much more than what we paid for the HD300's. What I don't like is you have a dedicated tuners for watching Live TV on the extenders. This is supposedly going to be addressed later. If I were Google, I would be watching what technologies they implement very carefully. SageTV has been doing this technology with the extenders in an even better way for a very long time. I guess you could argue that most prior art probably exists with MythTV anyways. Knowing that the industry is still catching up to SageTV kills me. SageTV is in my foreseeable future, but I would really like some tweaks/upgrades eventually. Google, please let Jeff bring us SageTV 8/9/10 in the future. I don't know where I was going with this rambling, back to the subject of the Tivo extenders. Good effort Tivo, now try a little harder, and follow through with update promises to tuners.

Quote:
1) They only work with Tivo Premier 4 and Tivo Premier XL4 2) They only work with CAbleCard (Antenna and ClearQam) is disabled on the Premier boxes 3) A premier box is 299 or 399 and then a lifetime is 499 (3 years of service bascially). 4) Then on top of that you still have to have the cable companies tv package ($80 plus in my area) AND you have to rent a cable card. sillyness |

If you were going to build a new server, the TiVo fees don't seem to onerous. I am planning on doing so soon and at the same time am evaluating the pricing on either a TiVo or DirecTV Genie with extenders.
I don't care to pay a monthly fee for extender use and that seems like a deal breaker for me. It's all psychological though as it will take many months to make up the $6 (30). If Netflix works over the extenders on the TiVo, then it becomes very interesting for the family. Depending on the truth to the rumors of an April announcement for the next-generation XBox, this may or may not make the top of my list. Of course, if Google ever decides to go with a cable card version of their SageTV software, I would be all over that; DRM included. B

I'm pretty sure these can't play your personal movie rips (MKV, HD audio, etc.), right? Otherwise they might be worth the cost especially if they also support online services like Netflix.

My old TiVo2 could play VOB files. I don't know about the current stuff.
