Question HVR 2250 and WinTV with Sage

I have an HVR-2250 working properly with Sage, recording 1 cable-analog stream for non-QAM channels, with the other port used to accept analog input from my old VCR to copy tapes to DVD.

My cable service is going to go all digital (with QAM) and the 2250 should work for that (when I change to the digital lineup ).

My question is this: if I buy & install WinTV to verify the incoming video on the HVR-2250, will it interfere with Sage (or vice-versa)? Does WinTV run as a service or a standalone app? Do I need to close it to keep Sage happy?

PS. I also run a SiliconDust HDHR dual-port tuner for the current QAM cable channels.

The last time I used WinTV, it can be setup like a background program or a regular stand-alone program that is started and stopped. It all depends on how you set it up on the computer to run in the background when the computer starts up via the "startup" directory or the windows registry startup/run. But technically it is just a program that can be manually started and stopped. I hope that clears the muddy waters a bit.

Yes WinTV needs to be closed to keep SageTV happy, because WinTV and SageTV will both try to control the HVR-2250 at the same time and that is not possible.

Save your money and time. I've never needed WinTV to get my HVR-2250s working with QAM in SageTV.

One thing, though. My cable provider sends analog channels and the broadcast network stations in the clear, but the high-definition cable-only channels are all encrypted. If you haven't already, you might want to verify that all of the stations that you are hoping to receive are sent in the clear.
