I moved 1.5 years ago and will finally be getting cable again next week. I don't miss it at all but with a new account, I can get an HD box for an extra 6 or 7 bucks, so I did it.

I think a lot of us use the hauppauge analog loophole... which is just fine as long as they continue to make boxes with analog outputs

Trust me, you won't miss cable... not one bit. Where I live, I cannot get OTA signals very good, so I just don't bother. It would be nice to have local channels on occasion but still... I don't miss commercials and depressing "news".

Cable/cord cutting (misnomer) is just great. Cable media content is dead to me, just give me reliable, fast, internet. I'll have none of your expensive trash

Except HBO, oh wait, that's no longer tied to cable companies

I have always had all of my channels protected but that problem is easily fixed with STBs connected to HD-PVRs.

That depends on what you like to watch. I am guessing that you are not into sports.

Baseball used to be my sport but after all the shit in the 90's... strikes, steroids, etc., I gave it up.

Otherwise, you are correct... not much of a sports fan. Big fan of Doug Smith though

We are about 8 days away from 3 months since the announcement. Am I the only one that expected something by now? I just hope we have something before the fall season, I don't want to be tinkering in September.

Three options:
1) Setup another server to tinker
2) Trust that Sage has an excellent track record of stable "releases" and wing it
3) Let others be the guinea pigs.

Hard to say. What kind of dates were promised when the announcement was made?

"Months, not years." was Jeff's quote.

Well that would be about 9 more months before we start getting into "years" then

I'm as excited about this as everyone else, but I guess we haven't moved close enough for updates so I'm guessing it's still a good ways off?

9 months before get into year(s), but 21 months before we get into years, if you want to get technical...
BTW my take on it was that it would be 6-12 months from the announcement.

Why announce it so early, then? A lot can happen in 6 months (Google could change their mind, etc.).

For years we had folks railing against Sage for not saying anything until there was something ready to use. Now we have people complaining that they gave out information too soon....

it could just be that it is taking Jeff longer to make the code changes than expected. It sounds like he is mainly doing it himself and sometimes "life" gets in the way.

Or It could be that Google has not given the OK to release it to open source even though they told him they would open source it.

If google hadn't approved it, Jeff wouldn't have said it was happening (assuming here). Looking back, I can only assume this was part of the original agreement when Google bought Sage. Jeff said "good things" were coming, and as it turns out that's the case. Of course it took a lot longer than any of use (outside the loop) hoped.

While of course an update would be nice, we're still entirely covered by the expectations Jeff set when he made the announcement. He said "months," not "weeks." We're 3 months in- it's not that bad. I think it's good he made the announcement when he did. It might have helped to stop more departures from the SageTV community, and it also gave an additional reason to get the HD300s when they became available.

Good point on the "good things" comment, Stanger. I never tied that to the open source move, but you might be right.

I honestly dont know. Maybe its pending some google lawyer approval, and since theres no real business purpose to spending time on this, its low on a list of priorities. Its summertime, and the lawyer wants to spend time on his/her yacht.

My lesson from the ceton echo debacle (can u believe how far they dropped the ball there) is that you shouldnt count your chickens before they hatch, basically.
