Open Source Project

So, who wants to organize developers for some type of open source project? I realize there are likely to be various project offshoots but might as well start with one "original" tree.

I'm in for helping out but I don't have the skillset to organize a project.

There are several "major" players here that I hope will put their hand up!!
I wish I could help, but my skill are limited to hacking existing code. Implementing new functionality is probably beyond my skill!

But this is great news!!!

maybe Narflex can be project lead since he's most familiar with the code.

We should come up with a list of things that are missing, broken or out of date.
We can then vote on prioritizing them.
The 2 things I'd like to see are
1. removing the heap limit (probably by going to 64 bit java?)
2. Native support for the silicon dust tuners. (not as big a deal)

Stuckless has a really nice UPnP browser built into Phoenix that'll do a way better job than the hacked up mess I did.

As I said on the other thread, I'm in as an engineer, but I'm a total newbie as far as the technical specifics of SageTV are concerned. So I don't think I can take on a leadership role at the outset.

Plus I've never been involved in an open source project. The meager project-management skills that I have in the closed-source software environment probably wouldn't port very well to the OS world.

I'm not sure if this goes against the OS nature, but without any coding skills all I can do is provide a "donation" for those who do. If a fund can be setup to entice our favorite past plugin developers to continue their work on Sage, I'm in for forking up some incentive.

I had no problem paying for useful shareware back in the 90's. I would do it again, but somebody needs to manage that.

There are lots of aspects to open source projects (coding being a core part, but not the only part). Testing and Documentation is another big part of it, and it's something that many developers tend to skimp on So, I'm sure there a role for anyone that wants to help.

I'll help with any custom images or themes for anyone that needs it. Even if it is just adding something new to the existing default images etc...

As long as Sagetv (even without being updated further) and the EPG keep working - I'll be around.

Cannot help with coding. But I surely can help with testing. If need be, I'm willing to build another server to help with the testing.

My time is limited these days and I no longer use sage, but I have all my stuff: tuners, server, server license, so I'm happy to lend some cycles.where I can.

Ditto!.....I have a couple 64 bit machines I'd be happy to dedicate to testing (Win 7 & 8). Also happy to donate funds and purchase new hardware for testing (possible extenders/tuners).

I'm not using Sage right now mainly due to lack of cable card support. I'll definitely be looking through the code when it's released and may take on a few up-front development tasks.

I'll be following the overall open source project, and possibly have some level of involvement (planning/dev/testing/release) with it.
