We recorded, but have only had time to watch a little of it, a 2 part series on PBS called "Rebels and Redcoats: How Britain Lost America", a view of the events from the British perspective. Near the beginning, there was some mention of the colonies not being satisfied with the profits they were making from trade... but they conveniently seemed to skip over what I thought I had read about the limits on such trade & the requirement that certain items could only be sold to or bought from England. (Among other things leading to the call for independence.) I am certainly no expert on the events leading to independence, so perhaps I'm wrong on the trade rules... but it is interesting to see a view from the 'other' side.
Other than that... the movie/musial "1776" on DVD was quite entertaining tonight & included much more than the VHS version. The version of people's opinions presented in such movies always makes me wonder what those people actually thought. For ex: they presented a Pennsylvania delegate as voting for the declaration simply because his was the deciding vote & he wanted to be forgotten by history; by voting against it, he would be remembered as the man who stopped it instead. I just can't imagine anyone who wanted to be an unknown taking part in such a thing in the first place! Yeah, I know... "poetic license". - Andy
