Since SageTV is now open source it's changing quickly and there really isn't a lot of documentation yet. If you go to this post there is a link to some downloadable files for SageTV version 9. I have successfully installed the 64bit .deb server on an old laptop running Mint 17.
The linux version was always meant to run headless, it never did provide palyback.
