EPG data licensing question

I have a SageTV server license (I actually have several since I bought two and then more second-hand). Can I reuse an old license key over and over again on SageTV V9/OS installs to get access to EPG data? This isn't clear from the FAQ - at least not to me.

What do you mean by using it over & over? Are these your own systems, or are they for other people? You still can't share the licenses with others.

These are my own systems. I want to reuse a server license that is currently being used on SageTV V7 on a new PC to test out SageTV V9 on one or two PCs. These PCs will initially only use an HDHR tuner since that is the easiest way to setup a tuner as it doesn't require moving hardware. Once I am happy with this setup then I may start moving over an HD-PVR from my existing install or use one of my spares.

I may also then install SageV9 on other PCs to use as client installs.

My understanding is that currently there is no SageTV V9 client. But can't you run the server in client mode by starting "sagetv.exe - client -connect hostname"? But presumably those installs won't require a license and won't need EPG data so that doesn't matter in those instances.

I don't work for Google and am not a lawyer nor have I contacted one of their lawyers... but I don't see why it couldn't be used to set up a new system for yourself.

A client doesn't contact the EPG server and you should be able to set up a v9 client like you would a v9 server just by installing the v7 client base & upgrading that. The v9 install FAQ should cover all those cases.

There is a working v9 client, just install v7, replace the sage.jar file, update the STVi files if you want, and replace the exe file with a v9 build if you don't have a client license to make the v7 exe happy, and it should run fine.

As to the v7 server license being used on multiple systems "in house" (presumably quite literally) to obtain EPG data in v9. I'm likewise not a lawyer, but I don't think there is anything legally preventing you from doing so.... (Multiple v7 servers would be another matter, but unlikely to be enforced at this point)

But the continued availability of that EPG server is being done as a courtesy to users of SageTV prior to the Google buyout of Sage. "Significant" abuse of that EPG server would likely result in actions being taken that numerous other people in here may not like. But the person who could be more definitive on the matter would be Narflex, including the (non-)definition of "significant" in this case.

It sounds like you have multiple licenses... Just use one of the others for your new server, and there's no issue. You won't need any licenses for any of the clients. Then, once you've gotten the new server all configured, and you take the old out of service - you've got another spare license (though I see no reason to have more than one in the same household).

I can see 2 systems if there are a lot of extenders in play, and/or a very large media library that goes well beyond video content. (Remember that SageTV does pictures and music as well, and 64 bit isn't widely available, reliable, or on windows just yet)

I can see another system for testing purposes if there is a SageTV software developer in the house, as the WAF on introducing changes to SageTV that causes their recordings to fail or otherwise making Sage unreliable would be very low, particularly if you made a habit of it.

I'm sure a few of the more careful types around here prototype any changes/upgrades they make to their system before doing it to their main system for much the same reasons as well, even if they do no development work on Sage themselves.
