Thumbs up I'm not a coder. Can I still help?

I am excited to see SageTV is alive and moving forward again.

I want to help but I am not a coder, Is there anything I can help with.
I do have some web hosting resources available and can do simple tasks.

Possible to have a list for us non-coders?

How are you at documentation? There is a SageTV.wikia.com that is dying for a bunch of stuff to be put to on it. Info from FAQ posts on here, and ultimately the entirety of the sage manual should be migrated to wiki form, as it will be better for open source maintenance.

Regarding the manual, I would think there are permissions required before migrating it to a wiki. can we get those permissions or would we need to paraphrase the entire manual.

If we can just copy and paste it would be quite simple to get a base copy up in a short time.
I am aware that there will need to be updates but a base copy would be a starting point.

Your thoughts..

Is anyone that is active in this community an admin of the wikia page?

I agree that documentation is a great place for a non-coder to help. Even if it's only for things like grammar and spelling.

Not currently. I've submitted an adoption request for it, as it has not been touched by the original founder since 2012, and he never created a backup bureaucrat or admin. I'm not sure how long it takes for the wikia staff or community support to handle these requests, but editing can go on in the meantime without it.

Okay, good. I couldn't easily find if there was a process for that, so I wasn't sure if it was possible.

I'll start making some contributions next week, if I get the time.

You can also throw some cash at the developers.

I have done some work on this and would be able to migrate the manual quite quickly if there are no restrictions. Do we need permission to do this?

The manual is part of the open source code on GitHub so it's covered under the Apache license as well so you don't need my permission to do it.

Manual migrated to Wikia

The bulk of the migration of the manual is complete.
SageTV.wikia.com

The Wikia site has some quirks to get used to but; So Far So Good.

I invite help to clean up formatting errors and upload pictures into the manual.

Nice work there, Mike! Besides the formatting and pics, I think we need to make it possible to jump to each subsection, as well as create clickable links directly to any other section being referenced in the text of the manual. So we aren't duplicating effort, I've started with the links in the table of contents and will finish that up tonight.

EDIT: Also, as I find headings which are not formatted as headings, I'm fixing those, since I need to link to those, specifically.

EDIT #2: Okay, so a LOT of the headings are missing in the text, so this is going to take longer than anticipated. LOL! But, that's what I'm working on.

Is there anything that would take the original Word doc and convert it, links and all?

If you mean to Wikia, then I don't think so. I found that Wikia has some quirks and limitations.

Wow, way to go. There are a lot of little things to do but I wanted to the bulk into the Wikia.

EDIT: An idea I had was to also include a link back to the table of contents, but haven't even figured out how that would look.

Thanks

Mike

Wikia wall

Beware that Wikia has a limit to how much you can do in a day. I have hit it more than once.

So if things stop working for you, you may need to wait till a new day.

Damn, that sucks. I haven't hit it yet, but I may. It took me quite some time to figure out how to properly format the damn things, but Chapters 1 & 2 are complete as far as the TOC formatting goes, as well as the links to the proper sections in each. HUGE difference, if I do say so myself. The content within those chapters has slightly been edited for the headings to be correct, but I may change the formatting because the sub-headings 1 sections don't stand out enough for my liking and blend into the other sections. I'll play with it. There's no way I'll be finishing this tonight, though!

But, this will continue to be my contribution to the OSS project. I'll keep at this over the next little while. I'm not sure just how smart the wikia code is, so I'd be hesitant for anyone to start making links within the text of the manual for now. I'd hate for my work to undo anything someone else does or vice versa.

Does anyone know if there's a way to make the main section of the table of contents look more like the "contents" part you can, optionally, expand at the top? I wanted to get some numbering or indentation, but it doesn't seem to allow that.

For example, there's this one section for chapter 2:

Starting SageTV
Controlling SageTV’s Service Mode Options
Accessing Network Drives with the SageTV Service
Should I Use SageTV in Service Mode?
Changing Property File Settings in Service Mode

Each of these is formatted in one of 3 ways in decreasing font size, with the first one being a sub-heading 1, the second one a sub-heading 2, and the last 3 being sub-heading 3's.

I can't figure out how to get it like this (still using same sub-heading formatting):

Code:
Starting SageTV
     Controlling SageTV’s Service Mode Options
Accessing Network Drives with the SageTV Service
Should I Use SageTV in Service Mode?
Changing Property File Settings in Service Mode
Anyone know if that's possible?

UPDATE: I figured out a way to use bullet lists that's pretty close to what I was looking for, so I think I'll stick with that.

UPDATE #2: Okay, now I'm torn. The new way gives this look:

...while the old way gives this look:

I like image 3 with image 2, but that doesn't seem to be a combination I can create. If I could just get the text of image 4 to indent at each sub-heading level, I'd be golden.

Yea, I found some restrictions in Wikia too. Most can be worked around, but sometimes we must lower the bar in order to work within the tool set given. I think you have made great progress.
