Limited SageTV Usage Case: Value to Upgrade?
I loved SageTV and my extenders back in the day and was very sad when it all seemingly ended. However I have since been very satisfied with Kodi as my media interface and its media database... with one exception: recording TV shows. Nothing is as good as SageTV at recording shows, managing conflicts etc.
So I have SageTV running on a headless PC which utilizes an R5000HD in a modified STB and it's a rock solid setup. The web interface is generally all I use to manage recordings and its fine, although it's MUCH nicer to skim through the EPG for interesting items to record using a SageTV client. Is there any value in updating to version 9 in my limited use scenario? Web interface better or even different? Cheers, RLW |

Probably not yet. Although Stuckless recently had a pull request accepted into the open source Sage repo that establishes v9 specific plugins. Eventually I think you'll see an upgraded Jetty plugin and refreshed Web UI that'll make it worth it to you.

I also use Kodi for playback of recorded programs but would really like to see an actual PVR addon that allows for live tv as well.
Perhaps the new web plugin will have a feature to allow for http streaming of live channels so something like the IPTV Simple Client addon (http://kodi.wiki/view/Add-on:IPTV_Simple_Client) could be used while waiting for an actual PVR addon to be written.

I agree that it probably isn't worth upgrading. Regarding the streaming of live channels that dinky brings up - can't you stream OTA channels via an HDHR plugin for Kodi?

Thanks for the feedback folks. I'll hang tough then and see where the devs take us. I'm pretty pleased to hear that reports of Sage's death were exaggerated. Lol.
A real PVR plugin for Kodi would be awesome, but of course, first things first. Live TV is of no interest to me - I don't follow sports and prefer to have Sage strip commercial before I watch recorded content. Thanks again, RLW |

Now that you mention it, I'm not sure. I thought that the HDHR original dual tuners (I have two) were not supported but now I'm having my doubts. I'll have to look into it again.

You need the HDomerun connect, extend or Prime no legacy tuners will work.

The other likely scenario, at least for me,is to run the SageTV android app as a favorite in Kodi on my Shield TV. I am using the amber skin for Kodi which allows adding favorites to the main menu.
Kodi for android almost works like a launcher. You can launch android apps such as Netflix from the main menu. When I exit the android app the Shield goes back to Kodi. We almost never see the androidtv ui. Right now I am using Npvr as my backend and the x-newa plugin for kodi as a frontend for recorded tv. The biggest drawback to this setup is that in-progress recordings aren't handled well at all. For example, if you start watching a one hour show at the halfway point, you can only skip commercials up to the 30 minute mark. Kodi thinks that the show is only as long as what was reported by the file when it was loaded. Once you get past the 30 minute mark pressing the skip button takes you backward to the 30 minute mark. My HD300 still has the best playback of OTA tv of any device in my house with flawless skipping. I am hoping that the android app will reach the same level of playback. If there was a foolproof (wife proof ![]() |
