Any way to automatically pad recording time?

Is there any way to automatically add a minute or two on the front and end of a recording time slot?

For instance, instead of recording Friends from 7:00 to 7:30, I would rather have it pad a minute or two on the front and end and record 6:58 to 7:32.

I know you can do this manually, but that is a real pain to do that every time.

I've used the 'pad' feature on other PVRs and it was a GREAT feature. Helped prevent cutting off the beginning or end of shows.

You can do that manually through the recording schedule but not automatically yet.

Also, if you have Intelligent Recording disabled it adds a 2 minute "soft" pad to the front of every recording (Favorites or One-Touch). It's soft because it only does it if it's not recording something else.

Good to know.

Can being able to pad beginning and end of recordings automatically be added as a feature request?

I have been recording a lot of college bball lately and it is getting frustrating when it stops with a minute left in the game, and I don't get to see the ending.

How can I avoid this, without having to copy the next show on the same channel??

Go into "Options" and then select to "Modify Stop Time". This will allow you to extend the end of your recordings. It's up to you though on how long to extend them.

Any word on whether or not this is on the list to be added at some point?

Thanks!

At some point in the future it most likely will, can't give you an estimate when yet.

Thanks for the update.

I know for myself and a couple others I talk to with PVR250s that are using a competitor's product, this feature is pretty much a deal breaker.

A PVR is of no use if it regularly cuts off the beginning or end of a show. And that is exactly what happens to me with no beginning & ending padding.

Unfortunately I record too many things to go back and modify each recording by hand. So I'll be watching for this feature.

But keep up the good work! Nice product!

Jason

Jason,

If you are cutting off every show, you need to adjust your computer clock because that shouldn't be happening on everything you record. I'd suggest setting SageTV to sync your computer time to the Sage server.

And if you have to pad everything you record, how do you handle back to back shows that you want to record?

Blame it on MTV, they like to end all their shows a minute or two late. Remember the days when TBS had everything start at 5 after the hour?

If that is the case (everything at 5min past the hour), wouldn't their EPG data reflect this?? I know late night shows on HBO, or the super size thursday on NBC, etc. start at weird times, and Sage usually gets this right.... but it missed one the other night....

I was trying to copy Mr. Show with Bob and David at like 1:40am to 2:10am (on HBO), and it didn't switch channels (or even sources) and copied fox... maybe it has something to do with this weird time slot?

Just thinking out loud...

I was just reminiscing (sp?) about the old TBS days. I also remember playing my Atari 5200, (How come you couldn't write any better games for us to play Jeff?) But yes SageTV would reflect the different start times in the EPG.

The error you saw could've just been a miss firing by the IR-200L, keep an eye out to see if you can replicate it again.

I don't think it's the Actisys because it needed to change sources from Comcast cable (on the rf input) to DirecTV (on S-Video), but didn't. It has happened once before, but I am not sure I can replicate it...

Matt,

Please send your sagetv_x.txt log files to support@freytechnologies.com so I can look at them to see what went wrong.

Nope...

What folks are looking for is an automatic pad on both ends. When we start up a Recorded Show, it can probably start at the point where the Scheduled Time starts but have this nifty feature to Rewind prior to that point. Of course this would mean the "pad" would have to be encoded in the file (or filename) somehow...

No, the real problem is that some channels cut off the very beginning, some channels cut off the end. So changing the clock will not fix the problem.

That is why other PVR's simply let you pad the front and back of the recording. That way you can be confident it will always record the whole show.

I.e. instead of recording 5:30-6:00, always record 5:28-6:02.

Obviously if you are recording two shows back to back, the only thing it can do it cut it off at the :30 or :00 mark. But in that case you will have all of the video anyway (minus any 'processing time' maybe). So it would then go 5:28-6:00 and 6:00-6:32.

Thanks!

Jason

But you'd still be in trouble when recording back to back shows on different channels...

Yes you possibly would be. The only way around that would be to get two tuners I guess (and since SageTV supports that, it could be done...)..

At some point you have to concede that you are doing the best you can do with a given set of hardware though.

Thanks,
Jason
