Linux VMs in Chromebooks
After about six months of going back-and-forth, I bought a Samsung Chromebook Pro a few weeks ago when Best Buy was running a promotion on the 64GB model. While most of what I plan to do with it simply involves a browser, I put it in dev mode to use Crouton to run Ubuntu on it. It's a bit buggy, but actually works better than I thought it would.
I'm not sure I would recommend a Chromebook to someone that mainly wants a Linux laptop, but I would recommend a Chromebook Pro to anyone that mainly just needs a browser and would view Linux apps as a bonus. Now it looks like we may see some sort of official support for running VMs under ChromeOS, based on this commit: New device policy to allow Linux VMs on Chrome OS Oh, and there's a bit of an easter egg on that page for anyone that looks carefully. |
