End of Service for the Weather Underground API

This service, which has been in use (googleweather plugin) for many years, will end after 12/31/2018.

They have yet to publish the the specs for the new API let alone what options we may have, if any.

For developers who use WU API data for non-commercial purposes, you will have access to a new plan for a personal use, low call volume API. Stay tuned for more details as we build this out.

Except that there are currently no more details.

Looks like IBM (the owner now days) wants to monetize it. Many of the PWS owners are not happy either.

I've looked into this a little bit. If worse comes to worse I think making a plugin to get the forecast from the NWS will not be too bad.

Was thinking of updating phoenix to support openweathermap so we had another option. Did not know NWS had an API... i will look.

The NWS API was not bad at all. I have the Java code written if you want to use it in the STV.

What has happened with Weather Underground is a crime and IBM should be excoriated for it.

Weather Underground was built on the back of all the Personal Weather Station owners - like me. Now they want to charge at least $800/month to access the data.

Update

Update: I have a lot of the weather working using the NWS API. Still looking for a radar image source. Anybody know of one?

If you can't find a good generic source for the radar, maybe let us optionally put in our own URL to a radar image for our locale?

For example, digging through the source of a local TV station's radar page I'm able to find a link that works fine for my area.
