The end of an era -- I'm out

It's not likely a surprise, since my activity over the last couple of years has been pretty non-existent.

I'd like to hang in there with SageTV, but, I just cancelled my Bell Satellite, and that puts to rest my dual HDPVR setup that has served me well since 2007.

I've been busy these last 2 years with work and other personal projects, and TV has been reduced to a just a couple hours a week (if I'm lucky), and during that time, between Netflix, YouTube and Amazon Prime, my SageTV wasn't getting much of a work out. I'll carry along with those services, and I might look into that IPTV service that dstanley mentioned in another thread, if I feel I need more. (Currently it's just my wife and I, as our kids are grown and moved out)

At some point I'll make my equipment available as a give away (free + shipping costs), but I don't have time to deal with that at the moment

The SageTV MiniClient app will be looking for a new home and maintainer. (It's open source, so there's no risk of it going away, but, someone should take ownership)

The SageTV Dockers for unRAID will likely need an owner as well. (Again, they are open source, but, someone will need to take them over to do updates, etc)

BMT has already been discontinued for some time.

Phoenix is already co-owned, so nothing new needs to happen there.

I'll still lurk around the forums from time to time (as i wait for code to compile ), but, for the most part, I think I'm done

I've really enjoyed my time working on SageTV and releated plugins. It's been one of the most rewarding things that I've done in the last decade.

This one hurts, but I get it. Thanks for everything you have done to create an enjoyable if occasionally maddening hobby for the past decade plus.

Ironically, the miniclient has hastened the demise of sage in our household. I replaced all the extenders with shields so every TV would have an all in one interface. Family never liked chromecast much so the streaming services were largely ignored. With the shields they are front and center alongside sage, so they now are getting a lot more use. My days are probably numbered too

I've been learning about channels dvr and will probably do the free month at some point. Sean, can you clarify your comment about dstanley's IPTV source? I searched but nothing jumped out. Also, Im in the states if that matters.

As I sit here in an Italian rental flat, watching the final Amazing Race Canada and cleaning up my excess recordings with the Mini Client installed on a Firestick, it’s a sad day that you’re packing it in. The Canuck angle will be missed, and all your great work. It’s really too bad the original authors sold-out to Google and started the long, slow burn, but there will never be another Sage.

I'm still using SageTV for over the air HD network TV. But everything else is via Roku streaming now.

Thank everyone. It's only been a few days using just Plex and the hardest was the first couple of days. I hated the experience, just little things like how the on screen remote works, etc. But I kept telling myself... "You remember that time you switched from XBMC (now Kodi) to SageTV and you hated it" I think right now I'm fairly well adjusted to just useing plex. Seeking/Skipping is a little slower, but not terrible. I'm going to stick with plex for a bit, but my ultimate goal is to actually move to Jellyfin. When I moved to SageTV I chose it because of how "open" the platform was. It wasn't open source, but, it was "open". Right now, I think Jellyfin is the only solution that is really open, but I want to see how well that takes off. For now, it's all Plex.

The skipping issue is one of the things keeping me with Sage. @stuckless - I don't think you watch sports and this is where I find a smooth skipping experience to be crucial -- at least I do as I want to be able to skip past stoppages in play.

My reason for staying with SageTV is the ability to import other media recordings and have them show up in the listing of programs that I have recorded.

Just wondering if you have tried the Plex DVR yet?

edit - It appears that there is an unRAID/Docker version of Jellyfin. Can you just install that docker and point it at your SageTV media files? Will this do anything that could possible screw up SageTV?

Yeah, I get that. I am not a sports person, so the only skipping that I do is the short 'recap' intros on shows and commercials.

Plex, Emby, Jefllyfin would all do that (ie, organize recorded tv and import tv into a single view). I have not tried the Plex DVR yet, mainly because right now, I'm without sat or cable and I'm going to give that shot until I run out of things to watch on Netflix, YouTube and Prime

I I did start a Jellyfin thread "Is Jellyfin the future". And yes you can install Emby, Jefflyin, and Plex on unRAID and just point it to your media files (I've been running all 3 for some time now), in addition to SageTV (it was one of the reasons I started to ask about Trakt some time ago (which Tom created an implementation for, but I've yet to try it out ) ).

I guess technically it's a fork of Emby at the point where Emby went closed source. But yeah, it's now an Open Source Emby (or poor person's emby given that it's free and open). Closed source Emby is like closed source Plex, it's great if you don't need to modify something. I expect over time they will diverge quite a bit.

To date, though, I'm using plex, because I wanted the experience of leaving sagetv to be smooth, and I own the lifeftime plex pass that I bought many years ago, so, I'll just use that until I get to the point where I need modify something, and then I'll look into Jellyfin.

I keep coming back to SageTV for movies still the best ... no other Piece of software lets me record by Actor or Keyword... or both at the same time.

Thanks Sean for all your contributions to SageTV over the years - I am in the same boat as you - I moved to Nova Scotia and do not have cable tv so I too am using Plex almost full time now.

As part of my Plex system I am using an Odroid C2 with OpenPHT - it will do full 4K and passthru audio of all formats.

I just wish it would play DVD and BD ISO's and rips with menu like SageTV does.
