TiVo to show ads before DVR recordings

It feels like everyone can't resist doing this to their customers eventually. They can skip these commercials for now, but once everyone stops protesting this change, they will also remove the skipping option. Eventually they will completely defeat one of the purposes of this device.

This is why I don't use any of my Amazon FireTV devices anymore. They started out being nice and useful, then Amazon pushed out an update that made them slower and turned them into ad machines mixing paid for and free content in ways that require careful attention. I know you can put a password on purchases to prevent accidents, but I don't like looking at content that isn't a part of my free subscription. I will not ever purchase it, please give me an option to simply not have to look at it.

yeah, it’s bulls$&* what Tivo are doing. They’re not a content provider, so they’re WAY off base, especially when you read the tivocommunity.com comments.

It is interesting that one of the benefits of streaming is no commercials. Now that they have a large audience hooked on streaming, they are adding advertising. And most disable the ability to fast forward and will not let you record the stream (except with their propriety DVR), you are stuck watching commercials again. We have come full circle.

It's true and actually worse since there aren't any real solutions to PVR streaming content to timeshift. PlayOn only half counts because it works about half of the time and requires too much effort to keep working reliably.

Edit: What I would really like to see (that will never happen) is a universal standard that any approved application can use to access content from any streaming service. Basically they would be re-inventing the CableCARD. My biggest issue is surprisingly not the commercials. It's the amount of control and navigational convenience you give up when you use these streaming services.
