Jeez, folks here are working on getting H.265 recognized and something newer/better has been announced. It will be years for it to be commonplace, but nothing ever stands still does it?

I am excited about the 50% reduction in size from h.265. Sounds like it will be awhile before we see it available in hardware devices.

Is there as much of a need for this? I guess it would help if 8K TVs and monitors become standard, but you can hold a lot of 4K H.265 content on a 10TB hard drive, and it doesn't take long to download stuff with a > 500 Mbps connection.

What codecs are part of the ATSC 3.0 standard? From what I can tell it supports no higher than H.265.

Everyone on mobile will benefit from H.266, and wifi users too. And many people can't get internet speeds anywhere close to 500Mbps. So yes there is definitely a need for it.

Eventually, yes you are right. But not until the hardware catches up. Current phones and graphics cards don’t have hardware acceleration for encoding or decoding h.266, so it will have to be done by the cpu and it is apparently very processor intensive. So it will probably be a few years before h.266 is in widespread use. It’s even possible that before that happens some other new codec comes along that’s even better (or at least more popular). It’s always difficult to predict which technologies will take off and gain widespread acceptance.

I wasn't thinking of mobile, I was thinking more of SageTV and downloaded video files. By the time this becomes standard we will all have 5G phones but reducing data usage on mobile will always be a necessity.

It is strange that we still have so much MPEG-2 content which is now more than 20 years old. All OTA is currently MPEG-2 and I would guess that the bulk of cable is still MPEG-2.

Comcast cable in my area HD is 100% H264... If you prefer watching the channels in SD you get Mpeg2.

Here in Toronto Rogers Cable is still MPEG-2, I know because I have very old cable boxes that would stop working if they went to H264.

In some ways that is surprising as they are pretty good in other areas - they have offered 1Gbps internet for a couple of years now, although I am sticking with my service that is 500/20 Mbps for now. But if I needed new cable boxes that could be an impetus to cut the cord as I bought my boxes years ago when they sold them for about $200 each. I am not keen to have to pay to rent boxes.
