unRAID - linuxserver falling out

I haven't paid much attention to unRAID recently, but apparently there has been a falling out between linuxserver.io, which made a lot of dockers, and unRAaD. Importantly for us they maintained the DVB edition which was required for using an HD-PVR in SageTV.

Does anybody know the backstory?

@trurl Please lock this thread. Due to an unexpected announcement from @limetech about Nvidia, I have since made the decision to do no further development work on Unraid. I'm quitting Unraid work. Anyone who wants to use DVB on Unraid, you have two options.

1. Ask LimeTech to include it as they should have years ago

2. Compile it yourselves using the available docker container.

LS.io will no longer be hosting any custom Unraid builds.

FYI - all that I have been able to find is this on reddit:

Quote:
Long story short, linuxserver (the unraid-nvidia dev) didn't like the fact that limetech decided to roll Nvidia drivers in themselves without telling them, got upset and pulled the plugin.

As you have said, if you have it already then you're fine, but noone new can get it and you'll have to run the beta to get the function back or wait for 6.9 to go final

It boils down to a comment made by the Unraid developers in their release notes for the upcoming 6.9 release. They indicated that they were trying to discourage unofficial builds of Unraid by now including and supporting nVidia drivers with the Unraid install. I think you can see most of it unfold in this forums thread:

https://forums.unraid.net/bug-report...&searchlight=1

The linuxserver.io guys didn't seem too impressed based on the forum posts i've read as they've been supporting the community for years with things that Unraid wasn't taking on themselves. I think they were just looking to be included in the discussion and given proper acknowledgement for all the effort they had invested and personal expense over hosting content etc.

Looks like the Unraid guys posted an apology thread here:

https://forums.unraid.net/topic/9902...&searchlight=1

I haven't read all of it and I'm not too active on the Unraid forums, so I don't even begin to assume I know the whole backstory, but this is what I've seen on the public forums.

That's too bad, but I think there are big egos at play here, which is not uncommon especially in bigger open source communities.

It's sad that when you have a beef with the product creators your solution is to tell your user base to screw off

I do get the need/want to be included, and I will say that Jeff here at SageTV was great at doing that (at least with me, but I'm sure with many others as well).

I'm sure they feel slighted and as a result, they'll take their ball and go home.

I had installed the DVB edition/plugin a few years back, when I was still using a Hauppauge 2250 card. I've pretty much completely moved to SiliconDust products, so I'm not using the 2250 anymore. With linuxserver.io deprecating the DVB edition, I'm thinking it's time to remove the DVB plugin. Anything special I need to do, other than clicking the "Remove" button on the plugins screen? Will doing that also revert me back to the stock Unraid kernel?

You could probably just upgrade to a new version of unRAID.

I'll definitely upgrade once 6.9 stable comes out. That should set the kernel back to "stock", but I suspect the plugin will still be in my list of installed plugins and will need to be removed. So I guess I would do that after a successful Unraid upgrade? On second thought, maybe I should remove the plugin just prior to upgrading to 6.9 stable?

It has been years since doing this but I thought that after upgrading you then need to go specifically add the DVB edition. So I am not sure that it is still an installed plugin after the upgrade.

That's correct. I moved my HDPVR over to a Windows VM and forgot all about changing to the DVB kernel each time.

Happy to report that working with ich777 on the Unraid forums has yielded positive results!

He is in the process of releasing a community plugin for enabling Firewire drivers in Unraid. I've tested it and it is working with the Sage Docker on Unraid 6.9 stable. The plugin should be available within the next few hours!

@Striker - Can you clarify how this process works. Will DVB, including FireWire, be built into the core of unRAID? Or will we have to install a plugin? And is the plugin for DVB or just for FireWire? Or are there separate plugins for DVB and then DVB-FireWire?

There are two separate plugins.

One for DVB to add support for various tuner cards (I have this installed to support the HDPVR drivers).

Another separate plugin for Firewire support.

Both are authored by ich777. He appears to have picked up the torch that the linuxserver.io guys put down.
