Windows 11 & Spinning Circle of Death
Well, I went and did it...updated to Windows 11 last month and am regretting my decision. I now frequently get the spinning circle of death trying to move through menus. It's not all the time and I can't seem to get a handle on when/why it occurs but I definately did not see this under Windows 10. Anyone else experiencing this? Thoughts?

All menus, or just when browsing recordings?
I will say that I've had a situation when bad recordings caused the system to freeze (spinning wheel) anytime I went into a listing of recordings that had even a single bad recording in it. For example, if I had a single corrupted recordings of "FBI" - anytime I browsed the list of FBI shows and that corrupted file was showing on screen in the list of shows, the system would freeze. I could browse other sets of recordings just fine however. The problem really occurs when you have multiple bad recordings across various shows. It seemed random when the system freezes or not, but it was actually very consistent and I finally figured it out and removed the bad recordings. I haven't had a problem with freezing since.

I hear about it from the wife when she goes to either 'Recordings' or 'Videos'. No bad recordings. After a reboot....everything works fine. If it was a bad recording, it would still give the spinning death wheel. Can't figure this one out.

Do you have your hard drives set to spin down after a period of inactivity in the Windows Power settings? If so, you will get spinning circles when you try to move through the recordings lists.

Never did figure this one out...heap size is huge, no rhyme or reason that I can see.

I'm starting to wonder if it's time to retire SageTV.

I dislike W11 from nearly every aspect. It will not be installed until I’m forced. Did you re-install Sage AFTER installing W11, or did you do an upgrade from W10, leaving existing apps/docs from before…

For just viewing media, Plex with a Roku works as well for me, especially now that they've added the ability to play files at their native refresh rate. The Sigma chips in the HD300's had exclusivity to playing movies at 1080p/24hz for the longest time, but others have caught up. Plex added a DVR function with comskip support. I must have been living under a rock. It works pretty well - not as good as Sage, but nothing is. |

Is the problem with the server or the client?
For server the way to go is unRAID. For the client, as long as you don't need 4K or the ability to decode H.265 files then buy some HD300 extenders.
