Viewing recorded mpeg's on other computers
If I want to watch the video recorded from my 350 on another machine, I would need to install the hauppauge decoders on that machine, right?

As well as a player of some sort (e.g. Zoomplayer, WMP, Media Player Classic).

The Hauppauge decoders are locked to Hauppauge hardware, translated that means they won't install w/o a Hauppauge card installed.
But all you need is some DVD player (software not drive) to play back the files. Or if that's not an option you can try the Alpha Dscaler 5 MPEG decoder (do a search). |

You may have problems installing the hauppauge MPEG2 decoders on another machine -- they might check that a PVR-X50 is installed...

Is it possible to use a different encoder?

Yes, just about any computer that has a dvd player comes with a software dvd player (powerdvd, windvd, etc.) that provides the necessary codec.

All you need is the freeware VLC which can be found here:
http://www.videolan.org/ I stream the SageTV files over my 100BT network and watch the programs with VLC. SageTV runs on an x86 PC but the files are watched on the 4 Macs running OS X that we use for everything but SageTV.

As I stated above Dscaler 5 Alpha installs Directshow MPEG2 decoders so you can play files with any Dshow player (WMP, zoomplayer, Sage, SageClient etc.) They're free too.
