Bad performance on my laptop

I am having very poor (choppy) performance with the SageTV client on my laptop. I have a Pentium 750 with 256 meg of ram and 10 gig of free space on a 54 mbps with a wireless g card. I’ve streamed with other things and they work fine and if I watch a an mpg4 movie through sagetv it works fine too but live tv is unbearable. Am I expecting too much from the laptop or what?

What kind of performance do you get when playing a DVD on the laptop? I would guess that your specs (both CPU and memory) are a little low since you are doing MPEG2 decoding in software and running Java. Unfortunately, I don't have a similar system to compare against.

Since this thread had gotten rather side tracked and the mods split off that part...

Just to get things back into the stream here in the forum...

I to feel your laptop may be a bit underpowered for speed. However, I would think if it can play a DVD ok with something like PowerDVD that it should be able to be used as a SageTV Client machine as long as you don't have much of anything else running on it (in the background) and have a good network connection (wireless is often rather iffy).

BTW: You might be interested in joining in another discusion that was kind of a side track of things as far as old computers and how they relate to SageTV in this thread:

Options for a REALLY slow computer?
