That's pretty good -- I don't think I can pass that one up! I'm sticking with these 5 year warranties from now on & it never hurts to have a spare drive available. Hmm... I just bought a 160GB Seagate recently (same price/simialr rebate), so I had better check that the rebate is one per drive, not one per household _period_.

Edit: Maybe I should look into an external firewire enclosure to replace my old 120GB backup drive.

Nah -- for SageTV, I don't like recording to a network drive. For backup, I like to use an external device so that it can be moved offsite, if needed. I already have one firewire backup drive, so a 2nd one is what I _really_ need to always have one here & one offsite. I am good about making backups, but I have been lazy about getting something stored elsewhere. I always did that when using tapes for backup, and I ought to be doing it with the hard drives too.

This same 200GB Seagate drive is on sale again -- $70 after rebate. I missed it the last time since it was out of stock, but this time I ordered it before they were all gone. ($10 more than last time, but still not a bad deal.)

Now to go find a firewire enclosure for it...

The optimal topology for a sage system is the server having its drives local, and clients using the streaming features built into sage.... no?

I think it's a bad idea to start crossing back and having the server looking for network drives on the client.... bad idea to have sage recording running on the same machine as sagetvclient....no?

To my mind, this is all part of network topology 101.... maybe others have different strategies?

That wasn't directed to me, was it? I already posted above that I don't like the idea of recording to a network drive.

But, my reason for buying this drive has nothing to do with SageTV -- I just posted this as a reminder for the return of a pretty good deal on a 200GB internal ATA/100 drive if anyone needs one. (And, it has a 5 year warranty too.) As I said back when this deal originally came up: I need more removable storage for system backup purposes.

Of course its always a good idea to have a local drive over a network drive. I was just suggesting that, by him implying that he needed an external enclosure, it probably meant that he was maxed out on how many drives he could have internal in his machine. If he did have a client and free space to mount the spare drive there, it would be an alternative.

An example of networking 101 could also follow my situation. My home network consists of 1gb backbone on layer 2 switches. I dont care how many network drives you access w/ how many clients, there will be no network saturation issues.

If I were to suggest my best option, I would suggest an external IDE raid cage. But then again, I would never even consider such an expense for something that records tv...

I.

The optimal topology...
It wasn't really directed at anyone at all. It was a comment that has been welling up over the course of weeks, mostly when I see people planning to use SageClient and SageRecorder together. The comment just sort of squeezed itself out when the network-access-to-drives isssue apppeared.

Please forgive the distraction.
