Possible microstutter solution (for some Nvidia cards)

Upon experimenting with different ways to reduce or eliminate microstutter in Sage, I have found a trouble-free solution that works on my NVidia FX5200 card. In the new driver custom resolution screen you can specify a refresh rate, so I simply used 59.94 (2*29.97). This totally eliminated all stuttering without the need to use Reclock (which is very troublesome on my system). However, this method did not work on my FX5950, it refuses to accept 59.94 as a valid refresh rate, so it may be hardware-dependent?

Reclock is the other way. This method essentially matches the Refresh rate to the media speed, reclock matches the media speed to the refresh rate.

my problem were with reclock
instead of little frequent stutters with VMR9
you got occasional big ones
and with overlay everytime you fastfowarded (skipped ahead) you lost audio for a sec or two
(I guess while it synced everything)

Sorry about the lazy quotes but
are you using the 5200 on a SDTV

cause I get perfect playback with nvDVD3 using pixel adaptive deinterlacing
using VMR9 and sonic audio decoder using default wave out

kny, thanks for your help. Yes, I'm using an SDTV. I've actually been using the PVR-350 output since the IVAC15/16 multi-chipset drivers came out. I had been tweaking the output of my FX5200, but quit after I got the 350 output to work. But now I'm thinking of going back to the FX5200 because of the 350 lockup problems. I was really happy with the picture quality except for the stuttering. Thanks for your settings. This is great news to me about the smooth playback. I kind of had decided that smooth playback to an SDTV from most video cards wasn't possible.

I have the same problem with Reclock as kny3twalker. I'm using an InFocus X1 projector at 800x600 with a VGA connection. Still working great here after 3 days.

what studder?

I have a FX5200 video card and don't have any studder problems.

I do get a lot of studder if DXVA (hardware assisted decode) is enabled, since it's just a 250MHZ GPU.

Oh, and I don't do VMR9 (just plain ol overlay) or any deinterlacing.

Using the default decoder and default audio.

I'm just driving a convential SDTV (with a good ol heavy CRT) with the S-Video TV-out (at 60HZ and 720 x 480).

If changing refresh rate fixes studder, then it sounds like this is because you are deinterlacing -- no?

An nVidia or ATI card will not output the interlaced frames properly to a SDTV so deinterlacing is necessary. So for those cards not deinterlacing causes more stuttering as the TV tries to display the bad formatted video.
