How do you configure SageTV to use JRE 5.0
Sun has now released Java 5.0 (rel. 1.5.0). People are saying it is faster to startup and has better performance. Anyone know how to get SageTV to use the newer version instead of 1.4.2.
Also, I was reading that the JRE server is faster in several tasks than the client. Anyone know how to get sage to use a "-server" switch? thanks. |

Anyone else here can feel free to correct me if I'm wrong here, but I believe by simply installing the latest version of the JRE you should be good to go.

I'd be careful of the new version and the -server switch unless you hear otherwise from Jeff.
If your system is presently very stable, you might be able to experiment, but if you have any instability, throwing these variables into the mix will eliminate your chances to identify problems. |

I apologize for not reading the first post more carefully Didn't realize you were asking specifically about running with the -server switch.

I'd like to hear from the brave individuals who have given 1.5 a go. You know you want to...... have to. Can't you hear it calling?

I simply closed sage (not sleep), uninstalled JRE 1.4.2 and installed JRE 1.5.0 and sage works just fine. If you're using nielm's stv you have to make sure to reinstall the nielm_stv-jre-lib-ext.zip into the directory JRE 1.5.0 is in for it to work right. I have no idea how to set the -server switch so someone else will have to try that. I'm not real sure if it's faster now, but hey, gotta have the latest software.

gather some specs on your system before and after you switch....approx startup time, memory usage, etc.

The JMV heap size is reduced by about 1/3

Reduced heap is good. I take it you must have come out the other side OK then. I suppose I better give it a go. I can't help myself. DFA

Are there any advantages to running the new version of Java? Does it increase stability or realiability?
I've noticed recently that sage sometimes crashes (hangs) when we try to fast forward with either the remote or with the mouse...could this be because I'm running an older version of java? (I'm running 1.4.2) thanks! rwc |

rwc, No. Your problems are not related to JRE 1.4.2. I have the most incredibly stable system and am running 1.4.2. I actually FEAR future upgrades! (Although I'm embarrassed to say I'm "in love" with Malore's latest beta STV with automatic commercial skip...AAAhhhhh.)

I installed 5.0 on my machine and had no end of problems!
I do use neilm's XMLTV import routine, and installed the files as requires but the xerces parser still wouldn't work. At the time I uninstall and went back to 1.42 as I didn't have time to get to the bottom of the problem. That was a few weeks ago so I might give it another go! Just thought I would share my experiences! |
