I am looking to buy the Sasem USB HDTV box (supports QAM reception). I know it doesn't work with STV - but I am working on circumventing that (software engineers force things to work...)

You know, legally, the Condo Association can not prevent you for getting DirecTV. I had the same issue, presented the legal case to the Condo Board and they had to back down. This is a long standing FCC rule.

I know what you mean about analog. The difference between what I record from DirecTV vs. analog channels on cable (yes I have both) are dramatic.

I have a Sony 28" widescreen and it sucks a**.
The menus look totally aufull, especially in the corners (all blurred). I am dreaming of the day that I get an LCD or Plasma screen!

**EDIT**
This was with my old nVidia 4800 card.
I now have a 6800GT which has gotten rid of the blurred corner issue.

I am at some point hoping to get hold of a 42"ish plasma/LCD at some point soon.

I think that I need to do some research into this though as I don't know much about Plasma/LCD's

Yes, do tell. I am shopping around and trying out diffferent HDTV cards right now, and I would like to know the best one.

Is there a better card than the Sasem?
I am trying out the ATI HDTV Wonder right now, and it's ok. The only thing lacking is some of the software features, like background recording. The picture is beautiful when I play it on SageTV though.

How good is the Sasem software? Right now my main concern is being able to record HD content OTA and to be able to play it back via Sage. I will worry about LiveTv and pausing etc......

My understanding is that right now none of the S/W decode cards can match the stability of the HW decode cards like the MyHD or AccessDTV.

If I were to buy a card now, it would be the AccessDTV since it is the only one that supports true PVR features, by that I mean especially an integrated EPG, and less importanly (especially for you) timeshifting.

Plus with the ADTV, there's the glimmer of hope that Frey almost supported it once already, so it may again in the future when the decide to go full into HDTV support.

I came across the STV network encoder source code that was being used on a previous project to capture from DVB-S/T/C cards- I was going to try to use same framework and wrap the directshow filters from Sasem...

That is plan A. If that doesn't work I was going to at least get STV to start/stop recordings... (not sure about how yet for that) I can do without LiveTV at first

Thats current approach - if there are any other thoughts - please share

of course the 720P HDWMV clips are breathtaking!

i have an old hollywood plus lying around but im not sure i want to go through the trouble of setting it up to play sage through.
I just purchased one of those. It's supposed to be delivered Saturday.

Hi Korben,

FWIW, my 'tv' is a slightly larger than 10-foot diagonal projector that will work at a resolution of 1900x1400 and I paid $750 with a warranty. If you have a way to 'hang' (ceiling mount) a large projector, PM me and I'll forward you the name of the dealer I bought mine from. He's a great guy, and has been selling projectors for many years with many satisfied customers (myself included) from the AVS forum.

I'm running a 3GHz Athlon 64, MSI Neo Platinum mobo, 512MB, Nvidia 5700 Personal Cinema, Sigma Designs Xcard, all in a beautiful CoolMaster Cavalier Black T04 HTPC case.

I am anxious awaiting a high quality PVR solution, like Sage, with OSD support for the Xcard. IMHO, the first vendor to do so, (and I don't consider TVedia to be in the same class as Sage) will be well positioned to take on Microsoft in the HTPC marketplace. Which probably means they'll be bought out by Microsoft and make millions on the acquisition.

You are right on the mark with that statement. I am such an avid Xcard supporter only because I'm stuck with SDTV (RPTV). Also the size does matter as well. Those with SDTV on relatively small monitors seem to be content with software decoder output. My graphics card output looks OK on my 15" office monitor. But when the size increases my satisfaction decreases to the point where I simply had to make the switch to a hardware decoder. If I wanted a soft, lower quality output I would have stayed with VCR technology. The whole point of running these things on PC's is to get increased functionality and a better picture.

I forget whose marketing drival made it clear they didn't support any hardware decoder cards because they didn't want to limit the solution to one or two cards. What hogwash!!!!!!!!! There are other front ends that support hardware and software decoders so why can't the big players like Sage, MCE and BTV?

Dale
