Arrow E-Mail interface to Sage Server

OK.....

I'm on the road across the country tonight and had to talk my wife through recording something on Sage that I saw a promo for.

Now, I know nielm has come up with a web server, but for those of us that don't have web servers and static IP address (with the costs that go along with that) in our homes......

What about the prospect of an e-mail interface?

I see that I want to watch JEOPARDY on 12/1 to see Ken Jennings (finally) lose. I send an e-mail that says in the body of text:

JEOPARDY
WRIC
12/1/04

or something to that effect. Sage will get the e-mail becuase it will have its own e-mail address (something that Comcast does give you without charging more money for). And, poof, it adds it to the list.

Sage could also be interrogated to show what it's recording and when by sending an e-mail with a certain instruction. After you ask it to record, it would send you an e-mail confirming that it actually got it.

Maybe you could have it send an e-mail at the end of the day to confirm all the shows it actually recorded that day including any errors.

What does everyone think? Now, I do not have that kind of programming experience. But if someone can add comskip to Sage, this shouldn't be that hard (I guess).

It would sure lower the frustration level with my wife when I travel on business and I ask her to make sure something recorded or add something.

Best regards,

Stacy

You don't need a static IP.

www.no-ip.com

it's free!

i have comcast cable and i haven't had a problem with not having a static ip. i don't think my IP address changes all that much anyway. still, no-ip offers a program that can check your IP address for you and update it.

also, when you say you dont' have a webserver, it makes it sound like thats a separate issue from the static IP address. anyway, the thin with nielm's program is it makes use of the tiny webserver applet (or something like that) which onyl requires that you have java to host something.

unless you are limited to telnet, i dont' see a use for this

Thumbs up

As abusu2003 says, the web plugin includes a web server that can be set up with near-zero configuration!

The web server instructions include how to setup a dynamic dns service using www.dyndns.org or www.no-ip.com, along with software which will automatically update the ip address associated with your hostname whenever the IP changes.

I am also running on a DCHP/dynamic IP address ISP, and have no problems with accessing the webserver... (in my case my home firewall/router updates the IP address)

Well, as you all are correct about the webserver and free services that monitor dynamic IPs... I can still see a use for an email interface. I used to live in an apartment complex that had high-speed internet built-in via T-1 which was of course behind the complex's own set of routers and servers, resulting in me getting a private IP. There was absolutely no way for me to get from the internet to my PC. An email interface would solve such an issue.

Hmm, so you had your router behind their router? Yikes... That's no fun at all.

I suggested this (email server) a while back.. I too think that it would be cool.. you could send email via SMS from your cell phone for example.. What I originally was thinking though was having Sage send an email "LOG" of what it had done.. If you use intelligent recording, it would be neat to see what it recorded during the day, as well as have comfirmation that a favorite was recorded (perhaps even note that the comskip has finished for the shows)...

Cool ideas!!! It's these types of things that will keep me with Sage and away from Tivo!
